Tokyo Hy-Power QRP Rig looks a lot like next Generation Elecraft!

James Duffey
For those of you who have dropped QRP-L, Jim Tittsler, 7J1AJH/AI8A, in
Tokyo has a nice post on the Tokyo HamFair. AMong the gems:

"The number of Tokyo Hy-Power products seems to be exploding.  This
year among all the new products were a couple that really caught my
eye.  They were showing a prototype ("reference design") HT-200 QRP
transceiver capable of 10W on HF and 20W on 50MHz, with general
coverage receiver.  They were also justifiably proud of taming some
industrial power FETs to produce a surprisingly small solid state
legal limit amplifier (see the article in the Sep/Oct QEX)."

Take a look; the HT-200 looks an awful lot like the long awaited K3! It
even has the general coverage receiver many want. - Dr. Megacycle

Boy, that sure does have an Elecraft look to it (panel color, LCD
display, push-button switches).  Kind of eery!  Clicking on the
picture will display a larger version.

It is kinda spooky!  Myself, I like the dot matrix
display.  It lets you do more in the available space,
like implementing an S-meter with more segments, and
display a little more information simultaneously, etc.
It's similar to the display on my AOR AR-7030+, which
I like very much.

As the principle designer of the K2, I have to take a few exceptions to
this comparison  :)

The HT-200's minimalist user interface is vastly different from a K2's.
Applying inductive reasoning, it would be even less like anything
bigger than a K2. In fact it has fewer directly accessible functions
than the K1. This may appeal to some operators, especially if they're
only doing voice modes and/or don't need all of the additional
features.

The K2 has 32 functions directly accessible on the front panel,
counting both tap and hold functions. The HT-200 appears to have 5. To
the extent that the rig implements additional functions at all, one
wonders how you get at them. The feature set is also not readily
apparent. Does it have a transverter interface? Receive antenna jack?
100-W amp? DSP? Remote control?

How do you adjust the keyer speed?

Does it offer functions such as TUNE, ANT1/2 selection, crystal filter
selection, audio filter selection, CW message record/play,
voltage/current display, SPOT, VFO reverse, direct keypad frequency
entry, etc.?

If there's an ATU, how do you activate auto-tuning? Does it provide
multiple antennas?

How do you turn on RIT or XIT, change modes, access memories, back down
the RF GAIN, turn AGC or noise blanker on/off, etc.? I get the feeling
that the "FNC" button is going to get a real workout.

Disclaimer: This may be a case of apples vs. oranges  :)   But I
believe I've fairly characterized the difference between the two in
terms of the user interface, which I feel is an important aspect of
radio operation.

Wayne

They used the same identifier as my old Motorola.
My HT-200 is a Motorola H23DCN-3100AW Handie Talkie.

i am looking for an old FHTRU or FTRU Motorola walkie talkie.

Hi Wayne,

Maybe if you were to show us what the K3 looks like we
could avoid all of this unnecessary speculation and
incorrect comparison?  8-)

What K3? We certainly have not announced anything like that. We're busy
making and shipping K1s, K2s and KX1s. :-)

I believe Wayne was comparing the K2 to this rig. It looks like it would
be a step backward for us to head its direction.

"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"

However, from the limited info available, it looks like the imitation is no
more than skin deep.

P.S.  OK, look.  It doesn't have to be a colour photo
and complete specs.  How about a hand-drawn sketch?
Anything!  Throw us a bone, man!

I was hoping you let slip that you were busy adding FCC approval
certificates to yet-to-be released amplifier kits. :-)

That does make me ask if anyone knows of any restrictions to exporting
/ importing these near-future kits into Canada?

Perhaps you could simply put up a "Feature Check List" up on your site....then,
instead of all the speculations, folks could fill in the check list as it
applies to the latest and greatest creation of the competitor, and then see
what it don't got.

It does look in appearance similar, but that is where it ends.  Now on to
the amps, etc.  I was thinking about a separation kit.  I know a couple of
Hams have done so.  Any ideas?  I would like to consider for a mobile rig.
