Toroids and hands

k6dgw
OK, assuming Eric will allow this (he seems to be pretty liberal as a
reflector moderator), here's several questions. Please reply *directly
to me*, not on the reflector!!:

1.  Do you think of yourself as right or left-handed?

2.  Do/did you have any problem with the toroid winding instructions in
your Elecraft manual?  (Mychael: your answer doesn't count!  We know you
can do this perfectly with either hand!)

3.  With which hand do you normally write?

4.  With which hand do you normally use a knife?

5.  With which hand do you normally throw a ball or bat a baseball or a
golf ball?

6.  Did you find a problem winding the K2 toroid inductors?

I'll collect the results and provide them on the reflector.  I've had a
number of rigs and some were more accommodating to us lefties than
others.  My K2 is at the top of the "Really cool" list so far .. a few
changes would be good for the 10% of us, but then, most Elecraft
customers are right handed.

Best Regards to all,

Re: Toroids and hands

Fred:

I wonder whether the normal "10%" left-handed population figure applies
to the ham radio community.

My observations in Electrical Engineering school was that the percentage
was far higher, maybe closer to 20%. That was a long time ago (coming up
on 40 years) but I recall reading some studies suggesting that math
ability and left-handedness were correlated.

RE: Toroids and hands

Craig Rairdin
Didn't we have this discussion here about a year ago? Seems like there was a
survey and everything.

In addition to the possibility of increased math ability, lefties are more
likely to be homosexual and neurologically disordered. Not that there's
anything wrong with that.... :-)

Anyway, check the archives and I think you'll find this discussion last May
or June (2005).

Panadapter Order Cutoff

Jack Smith-6
A short reminder that the order window closes tomorrow (Friday, 18 Aug 2006) for the initial Z90/Z91 digital panadapter kit order.

I'll be placing orders for the long lead time parts early next week and it will not be possible to increase the quantity order after that point. (Yes, if you let me know before I send the first order off on Monday or Tuesday, I can probably accommodate you.)

East Coast USA Signal Levels

Jack Smith-6
In reply to this post by Craig Rairdin
I've had an interesting E-mail discussion about European versus US
shortwave broadcast signal levels on the 40 meter band.

To help put some numbers into the discussion, earlier this week, I took
a couple spectrum analyzer measurements of the 40 meter band (actually
6.5 - 7.5 MHz) and 0 - 20 MHz. I've posted the screen captures at
http://www.cliftonlaboratories.com/Updates.htm, along with a brief
discussion.

These numbers may help you associate the K2's dynamic range and 3rd
order receive IMD specifications with typical signal levels. (Remember,
it's not just signals on the ham bands; it's signals within the
receiver's front end bandwidth that must be considered.)

Of course, antennas, propagation and other considerations determine
signal levels, so I offer this data as only one set of measurements and
would be interested in seeing others.

Jack
