Trying to use KPA-1500 on 160

N4ZR
New owner trying to get ready for the CQWW 160 contest.  Rig is a K3
with the Aux cable connected.  When the amp is in Standby mode, using a
dummy load, I'm readily able to deliver 30 watts CW (or 50 or 100) on
160 with the tuner bypassed or in. However, as soon as I switch the amp
to Operate, and send my first dash, I get a hard fault with the LCD
message input power 67 watts.

I'm guessing it might be a K3 adjustment, but I don't know where to
look. Any advice much appreciated!

Pete

I have. KPA500. I can set power out to 100 watts for K3S and amp in Standby. When I switch amp to Operate, I set power to about 20 watts. Next time I switch to Operate the J3S drops to the 20 watt setting. This is a per band setting.

There may be a Config menu setting for this but I’m not sure.

Good luck.

Pete;

You should set your K3 so that it automatically adjusts power when the KPA1500 goes into OPER mode. To do this, go into the Config menu, the  PWR SET entry, and set it to PER-BAND as described on page 63 of the K3S Operating Manual, rev A1.
At this point you can switch the KPA into OPER mode, then adjust the power level to make the KPA happy. Do this for each band - in this case when on 160 meters.

Good luck in CQWW 160, be sure to work lots of my fellow NCCCers!
