Yep, my wife went to Austin to visit the grandkids today, and before she left
she told me not to record anything because she had a "four hour recording of the wedding scheduled". Yes, you right Ron. Gentlemen like you, Fred, Don (and of course Eric and Wayne) have given me great direction in my young amateur radio path. My grandfather (the original W8FGU) gave me a boost when I was a kid, but you all have given my the drive to dig deeper into the "mystery" of radio.
Your guidance is truly appreciated on my part and my hope is that y'all will not loose heart at what you see and hear about what some will say about this hobby, but will continue to nurture those of us that want to continue in the tradition and strive to learn all we can. I'm amazed at what I've researched over the last few years based on what you've posted on this reflector. Whether you know it or not - you already have "paid it forward" - thanks to all of you. I'm not much of an operator at this point, but I'm certainly still learning a lot of electronics, physics and general guidance about amateur radio from all of you. Keep up the good work and know some of us will carry on the tradition. 73, Dave W8FGU -----Original Message----- From: "Ron D'Eau Claire" <[hidden email]> Sender: [hidden email] Date: Fri, 29 Apr 2011 20:46:23 To: <[hidden email]> Subject: Re: [Elecraft] UK SSB Elecraft Net I find it nice to be reminded of traditions and institutions that span the centuries with such beauty and pageantry in spite of the foibles of us individuals (in the Royal family and everywhere). We Hams have such traditions too, but when someone wonders what a Wouff Hong is I am afraid our traditions are being cast aside as irrelevant. Our past is never irrelevant - as Hams or as citizens of the earth. Our past is an arrow pointing to our future- an arrow whose flight is controlled by our choices today; choices that presume we understand our past. So what do we want our children, our grand children or our great-grandchildren who choose to become Hams to inherent in this hobby? I choose a tradition of mutual help, caring and respect for all Hams, even the LIDs who haven't a clue what the rest of us are doing. With patience and perseverance we will show them. Some will leave the hobby, and others will carry on. They will carry it on and pass on our legacy. And the lessons learned at the mic, at the key or at keyboard will stand each one in good stead in all aspects of life. I know this is true, because there are many Hams, now long gone, who helped me as a youngster enjoy and respect my hobby and, in doing so, taught me important lessons about living a joyful, useful life. It's only in my mind, but I remember each of them will just as much solemn respect, appreciation, joy and celebration as was publicly expressed at the Royal wedding. I know there are countless other Hams out there who know exactly what I mean. I've had the privilege of having QSO's with some of them and sharing our stories of appreciation and discovery. I agree with you on the the fact that there are nice traditions outthere, kept on going by true enthusiasm (rather than public money) such as Amateur Radio, and I wish there were more like it based on cooperation and unconditional help between people. We might have to rediscover or create them, because we are going to need them.
But you must be joking about the royals. Many countries (including USA) had to fight bloody battles to get their independence (more or less successfully) from this family. Plus there hasn't been a British king in England since the battle of Hastings, and William the conqueror took over. They didn't even speak English at the court for hundreds of years after that. This is a tradition of classism and enslavement of the many (World level) for the benefit of the few. We need to discriminate between traditions. Amateur Radio is 'noble' in a very much opposite way to royalty and empire building. I never "got it" in the first place.
Wifey got up at three AM and watched it. She then proceeded to gripe about the coverage the rest of the day. She said some unkind things about Katey Couric and questioned her heritage a couple of times. Seems the wife was interested in the sites and sounds, "the pageantry" and not the play by play from the talking heads. "Everytime they showed something worth watching it lasted about 30 seconds then switch right back to those people". We're getting a cable TV upgrade so we can get BBC America. I said "what for,.....better coverage of the divorce?" Got me out of the conversation. Just to put another view about about the royals and without going into
detail on moral and historical issues, not everyone in the UK currently shares Adi's sentiments. Probably not the hundreds of thousands who turned out to watch the wedding in person or the millions who watched on TV in the UK and that's without mentioning billions worldwide - even though it may well have been of more interest to YLs and XYLs hi. What was noticeable here was the happy atmosphere and the large number of young people out on the streets to see and celebrate the occasion. If we could get the same number of young people enthused about amateur radio it would be great! Maybe the last word could go to a headline in today's UK "Financial Times" : "A near perfect day as globe tunes in to see Britain at its battiest - and best" In case "battiest" doesn't transatlanticise it means "most eccentric" or "craziest" :-) 73 to all Geoff GR3UCK ----- Original Message ----- From: "Adi Andrei" <[hidden email]> Sent: Saturday, April 30, 2011 9:45 AM > But you must be joking about the royals. > > Many countries (including USA) had to fight bloody battles to get their > independence (more or less successfully) from this family. > Plus there hasn't been a British king in England since the battle of > Hastings, and William the conqueror took over. > They didn't even speak English at the court for hundreds of years after > that. > This is a tradition of classism and enslavement of the many (World level) > for the benefit of the few. > > We need to discriminate between traditions. > Amateur Radio is 'noble' in a very much opposite way to royalty and empire > building. > > Cheers, > > Adi > 2e0ttx ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Two Billion people watched! So did my wife and I (midnight to 4am in Alaska).
It was an interesting show of pagentry that is probably not going to be around much longer with all the insurrection going on around the world. Nice show! (or Jolly Good! in British). Wish them well. My ancestor came from england in 1652 so have tenuous links back there? William's ham license would have an "L" in it for learner! ;-) 73, Edward R.
