Elderly, but mojo-filled and fully loaded K2 #0771 has
received new updates of T1 and T2 from the Toroid Guy, and new crystals in both the SSB and CW filters. Results? A fabulous radio made even better ... which is mighty hard to believe, but it's so. Better stop-band rejection, better inter-filter tonal matching on CW, lower passband loss, "nicer" sounding SSB. Also, "touching up T1 and T2" (especially, mounting T2 slightly elevated form the board) improved TX efficiency by over 20%. This radio was built in 1999 and is STILL getting better! I have had, and have sold, no less than eleven rigs in the time I've had this Elecraft, including two IC756 family rigs and an Omni VI+. I *defy* anyone to show me another exmaple of continuous radio improvement (without total radio relacement) happening elsewhere in hamdom, ever since the Signal*One. I may be preaching to the choir here on this reflector, but I'll say it to anyone willing to listen: if you are not yet a K2 user, you are simply NOT getting all the enjoyment out of the hobby that you could. Moreover, a brand-new K2 costs LESS than just the FIRST YEAR DEPRECIATION of any rig that is a close peer in performance. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Take Yahoo! Mail with you! Due to the huge number of projects I'm in the middle of, I decided I don't have time to build a kit, so I bought a used K2, serial # 568. It already has some updates, and it will cost me about $100 to add the remaining updates and mods I think are important. That's amazing. The first thing I will do is the 2nd filter passband flattening mod, since I have the parts in my junlbox to do that. The different tonal quality between usb and lsb is one of the few things that bugged me about by new acquisition. In the process of looking at the passband shape using an older (free) version of the Spectrogram program, I decided to take a look at it using the spectrum display in MixW and Hamscope... two PSK programs I have. Of the three programs, I definitely like MixW the best, Spectrogram 2nd best and Hamscope the least (because it doesn't have markers... at least in my version). MixW is fast, has good dynamic range and allows for up to four markers. Now that Sprectrogram is no longer free, I thought I would point this option out to folks who happen to have these other programs. BTW, I was able to get more than adequate "noise" signal by cascading a couple external broadband preamps I have on hand.
