Upgrades to K2 S/N 638

David Woodhead-2
I recently acquired a semi complete K2 (S/N 638). I intend to complete it and suspect there have been several design improvements since it was sold. Could anyone point me to a list of recommended updates/mods that I should incorporate?

Thank you.

David

David,

I would suggest that you review the A to B mod on the Elecraft website
www.elecraft.com (Builders Resource area) before doing anything.  Download
the A to B instruction manual and make a decision of which 'optional' mods
to install (I recommend all of them), and if you are not certain they have
been changed already, I strongly suggest you get a new set of IF crystals
and replace them (including grounding on 2 sides near the bottom).  If you
want to see all the mods that folks have done to customize their K2s, be
certain to look at the list of mods that Sverre, LA3ZA has complied - Sverre
does an excellent job of keeping that list up to date.

Since the A to B change (SN3000), there have been only a few changes -  the
PLL temperature stability mod, the keying waveshape improvement, and the
'really strong' receiver signal handling mod (2 back-to-back 1N4148 diodes).
I can't recall any others at the moment, but of course, you will likely also
want to update the firmware to the latest level (the MPU and KIO must be
replaced to accomodate the keying waveshape mod) - review the K60XV option
information on the Elecraft website to see what other option firmware you
would like to update.

When you are done with all that modification (and it is not really that
difficult - only tedious), you will have a K2 that performs the same as a
brand new one.  I have K2 SN 00020 with all the updates as a testimony.  You
will not be disappointed - do them all (but complete the K2 as is per the
manual instructions first unless you are an extremely competent builder)!!!
