Using PSK 31 with my K3, and Ham Radio Deluxe

Bill Thompson
For some reason, I can key up my K3 on 15 meters, and get power out. When I
send out a CQ, the red TX light comes on, I get a audible tone, and power
out to my antenna. The CQ message shows up on the message screen in the
DM780 program. When I try to send text on 10, 20, 30, and 40 meters, I get
the red TX light, but no audible tone, and no power out of the K3. I can't
see that I have anything set different for the 15 meter band than the
others. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Bill AA4MJ

Make sure that mode is set to USB for the 10, 20, 30, and 40 meters.

Re: Using PSK 31 with my K3, and Ham Radio Deluxe

Don Wilhelm-4
Why would one want to set the mode to USB when the K3 provides DATA A
mode which is the same thing except that compression is automatically
set to zero, the equalization is turned off, and the input level can be
set to Line in and the level remembered so it is almost automatic once
set up.

In answer to the original question, check the data submode - that is a
per band setting.

Re: Using PSK 31 with my K3, and Ham Radio Deluxe

Greg - AB7R
Exactly.  You should never use USB for PSK....it enables unintentional
mistakes that can create a strongly over-driven signal and bad IMD.
The key is that it is a per-band setting as Don said.

Don,

Along this line, I think I see that the Line Out level (Mic control) in Data A mode on my K3 needs a bit of "tweaking" when changing bands to get the ALC level to maintain the 4 bars with the 5th flickering.  Does this sound normal?  Could it be the reason for someone like Bill (below) to not get power out with PSK31 on some bands but get it normal on others?

Re: Using PSK 31 with my K3, and Ham Radio Deluxe

Bill Clarke
I tried to get my K3 going on PSK/RTTY several months ago. No dice!

Since then I have been using my TS480 with great success. I had it on
the air within ten minutes and have not looked back.

I reserve the K3 for SSB and CW.

No flames please - I do what works for me!

In reply to this post by Terry Schieler
Terry,

It is possible - recall that many interface boxes come plugged for mic
level output which is not nearly enough to use at the K3 Line In.  Most
of those interface boxes do make provision for increasing the level of
the audio output.  Yes, it is something to be checked.
