Hi, My name is Ken / ke7hge and I'm new to the group. I haven't purchased a KX-3..yet. I am on the cusp. One question I have is regarding the possibility of connecting the KX-3 to a Heathkit SB 200 I have setting here. I bought the amp, installed the Harbach (sp?) soft key and soft start mods with the idea of using it with my Yaesu 897d. I have never hooked it up, but then again I have 100 W available with the 897. I'm considering selling my 897 to partially fund the KX-3, which would leave me at 10 - 12W which is fine, except.sometimes higher power is desired. What does everyone think, will the KX-3 and SB 200 be compatible, and if so; will I be able to drive the SB 200 to a point where I will get 60-70 W output? Thanks for your consideration, Ken / ke7hge I lead a well ordered life; random is an order. ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Hi Ken:
There is a Heathkit forum you could try this question out on. From what I have been reading, 10-12W is a little low on the power curve for the amp and getting it tuned up would place some stress on it. When I use it, mine likes to run at 50-60W input from my K3. Gives me approx 500-600W out. I believe there will be a matching amp for the KX3 coming out. That may be more in the cards. Your mileage may vary, however. As noted by Wunder below, there are folks out there who are doing it. Good luck. It should work fine. I was able to get about 100W out of a Drake L-75.
Just tune the plate and load controls for maximum RF output. (There's not much point in trying to dip the plate current. Since almost all the current is resting current, you don't see much of a dip.) Ken,
Try driving your SB-200 with just 10-Watts output from your FT-897D. RF is rf, no matter the source for such purposes! It would help if you had an accurate Wattmeter to see the results! I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Bert, N4CW In a message dated 2/7/2013 11:56:53 A.M. I happen to have a KX3 and a SB-200 (with Taylor 572B's) on my bench.
Without trying to hard, I was able to get ~110W out on 20m. ~iain / N6ML On Thu, Feb 7, 2013 at 2:07 PM, <[hidden email]> wrote: > Ken, > > Try driving your SB-200 with just 10-Watts output from your FT-897D.
