I'm looking for a vary-speed attachment for my newly acquired 1943 Vibroplex Original plus a couple of extra weights to experiment with.
Anyone? Off list please. 73 Steve W1SFR ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Steve,
I also have been playing with a couple of bugs. I converted one to a lefthanded bug. Trying to be able to send with either hand. I can send reasonably clean CW with either hand at about 10 to 15 WPM. To slow down the original bug I have used extra washers on the shaft and also wrapped several turns of solder. You might want to try the CW reflector for more info. Good luck 73 Joe K2UF With enough THRUST pig fly just fine. -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Stephen Roberts Sent: Friday, December 14, 2012 8:13 AM To: Elecraft Reflector Subject: [Elecraft] Vibroplex I'm looking for a vary-speed attachment for my newly acquired 1943 Vibroplex Original plus a couple of extra weights to experiment with. Vibroplex makes several different weights for these bugs. However, I always just used the large solder wrapped on top of the original weight. The new weights are on this page:

My crew mates at the coastal marine station all had shiny Vibroplex bugs
they carried around in velvet lined wood boxes. They were all lightning fast on the dot side, and various "methods" were used to slow them down. See http://www.radiomarine.org/gallery/show?keyword=kphhistory&panel=pab1_1#pab1_1 scroll down to Les Burger on the right for an example. My beat up J-36 by Lionel [$5 at Surplus Sams] that I carried in my backpack would easily slow to 10 WPM, the leaf spring was about half as thick as a Vibroplex. Putting more weight on the armature will slow a Vibroplex, but it's also additional weight you have to slap around, and can lead to an "interesting" fist. Nov (?) QST had a cheap suggestion. There is a gadget that attaches to
the sides of a carpenter's triangle to hold a setting when they are making lots of repetitive cuts. A pair sell for about $3.50 at your local building supply store. They are brass colored and attach nicely to the arm, either in place of or in addition to the stock weight. I found adding one of these to my original weight (no room for more) slowed the dits down nicely. Another example of hamgenuity improvising a product for an unintended use. But, I much prefer being able to reach over and turn the knob on my K3/KX3. Buck k4ia On 12/14/2012 1:37 PM, Bill Hammond wrote: > Vibroplex makes several different weights for these bugs. You veterans probably already know this, but...
I have a "Vari-speed" made by Vibroplex. It slows down the bug quite nicely. I used Vibroplex for about 40 years. I took 3" of 1/4" copper tubing and
replaced weights with it.. Crimped it on. Then I wound large solder on a alligator clip. This could really slow down the dits. But I cud also send very fast with it by moving the alligator clip on the tubing. Looked terrible but sent very nice CW. 73 George/W2BPI ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Gosh, what a refereshing thread! Imagine - some CW Ops actually use
BUGS!!! I have the Vibroplex extension for my 1964 Champion (I bought it with paper route $$ and took it to sea when I joined the Navy) and it still works FB. If you have a "round arm" key, you can visit your local hobby shop and get some brass sleeving to extend the arm. Personally, I prefer an arm extension to just adding weight. Seems to make the key behave better. Now, if anyone reading here *really* wants to target slow speed CW, check out the VIZ VERTICAL at www.vizkey.com. Slowing down to help the newbies is very satisfying. Having that "just right feel" makes it even more appealing to you and can motivate you to spend more time with the slower folks and help them build their confidence and speed. Long live "real" CW (manual keys and brains). 73, Stan WB2LQF ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
