If you can spare a few minutes to give our latest field-test code a
serious work-out in strong-signal conditions, please email me directly
(n6kr at elecraft dot com).
Details:
The K3 now instantly detects situations where the AF output would be
so strong as to drive the speaker or headphone amplifier into (or
above!) the clipping range. If this happens, AF is muted until you
reduce signal levels.
Usually this would only occur with AGC off and both RF and AF gain set
very high, but we want to be sure, so the protection is turned on at
all times. It should have no effect on normal operation.
Another possible source of excessive audio is a DSP internal
overrange, which could result in a very loud audio burst. We believe
these will never happen again, thanks to additional DSP self-checking
we've just added.
Testing will involve doing several dozen mode changes (between CW and
SSB modes) with NR turned on, in the presence of strong signals. A
signal generator or on-air signals could be used.
Once we've got some test time in on this revision, we'll do a new beta
release.

Wayne
