On a particular band I use the K3’s internal antenna tuner to tune the SWR to 1.0-1 or so it says. I have a W2 attached inline and it reads an SWR of 1.7-1+ for the same setting. Which is correct? can the W2 readings be adjusted/reconciled with the readings on the K3? is there a problem? What is the point of the W2 if its it does not reflect ( no pun intended) the correct readings?

The internal tuner does not change the SWR on the feedline (at the
output of the tuner). It will change the SWR that is at the input of the tuner, and that is the SWR indicated by the K3. The W2 is indicating the SWR at the tuner output (and that will not change with tuning). For those who want to have the feedline SWR and the power output displayed, the W2 is "the way to go", if that does not interest you, then it may not be of value to you. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/24/2013 2:00 PM, Richard Thorpe wrote: > On a particular band I use the K3’s internal antenna tuner to tune the SWR to 1.0-1 or so it says. The short answer is that they are both correct. Each measures the SWR AT THAT POINT in the system.

The K3's internal tuner matches whatever impedance it actually "sees" at the antenna connector to the K3's output impedance [50 ohms] and thus the K3 "sees" 1.0:1 SWR. Neither it, nor any other such tuner at the rig does anything to the SWR on the coax, and the W2 is measuring the SWR on the coax. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2014 Cal QSO Party 4-5 Oct 2014 - www.cqp.org ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
