W2 Review?

rfenabled
I would have ordered the W2 had it incorporated an Analogue style display.

Call me a dinosaur or whatever but the K3 has the bargraph meter display already but some of us are stuck in the past and I prefer to see the cross needle type display over the bar graph.

As I am always portable/mobile these days I do not run a PC/Laptop and unless I am set up for a few days and want to do PSK/RTTY etc.

Just my old stuck in the past point of view, not meant as a criticism in any way.

Hi Gary

I agree with you on the analogue meters, you cant beat them.

I was hoping that Elecraft or  LDG would bring out a meter for the K3 like the LDG DM7800 that you could plug into the K3. I can barely see the K3's Smeter and other meter readings.

The W2 is also very expensive for what It is. I would rather put the money towards something N8LP's meter or the Wavenode WN2 which includes a spectrum analyzer with much better functionality. The Wavenode sensors are also priced well..

Elecraft seems to use very small cores for its directional coupler, it does not strike me as the right size ferrite cores for a 2kw meter. However I am no expert on this.  I have looked inside many wattmeters  as a basis for comparison.

We fortunate having so many choices in a free market that can  make everyone happy, to each their own!

John

Hi Juergen,

Thanks for your close scrutiny of the W2's coupler. No need to worry,
however:

The W2's cores are about the same size as the ones in the Palstar
unit, as well as the ones we used successfully in a 1500-watt
prototype amplifier.

These cores are operating at a satisfactory flux density as shown by
careful modeling. They also don't get too warm to the touch when
operated at 1500 W.  Type 61 material has a Curie temperature around
350 degrees C, and we're not even in that ballpark, even well in
excess of 2 KW.
