WA3WSJ: Pimped Out KX1 Progress

WA3WSJ
Hello All!

Well I've had my KX1 on the air tonight and checked it out some. Here
are some observations.

1.I found the K6XX CW Indicator to work great! I had been forgetting to
put my display on the 10hz display -duh! On the 10hz display I can zero
in on the signal just fine. In fact I can tell to within +- 10hz where
the signal is located with very few false blinks! I've tried it on very
weak signals with great success. I keep my filter set at around 750hz.

2.Strong signals work great to, but I've learned to turn down my RF gain
control to have a pleasant QSO. My K1 wasn't as sensitive to strong
signals as the KX1, but the RF Gain pot works wonderful.

3.I used a 6.8K smd resistor for the LED brightness, but I think I'll
try something a little larger to turn down the Map LED brightness with
the K6XX Indicator to save some RX current.

4. Tonight I worked K3KDK who lives about a mile from me. I had to turn
down the RF gain to minimum, but it worked fine. Jim, K3KDK, gave me a
599+ -hi!  I also worked VE3XDD in Ontario and he gave me a 579 report.

5.The increased power modification seems to work just fine. I like the
extra 1w or so. Tonight I was putting out 4w into a HF-2V Vertical
ground mounted.

6.Waiting on a small speaker that I plan to mount somewhere in or on my
KX1. Also waiting on a LiPo battery protection PCB to install in my
battery cover. I received six AA 3.7v batteries, but I want to wire in
the PCB first and then install the batteries in the holders to have an
internal 12V 1.5ah battery in my KX1.

7. I received a new bottom cover - not cheap from Elecraft. I plan to
use it for ?

72,
Ed,WA3WSJ
