WA3WSJ: Pulpit Rock Polar Bear Report

Edward R. Breneiser-2
Hello all,

Well, well, just another beautiful night up on the rock here in PA. We
had seven polar bears up on the mountain. Steve and Matt, W3HF and
KB3JJV worked psk31 and 2m. Steve had trouble with his antenna so I
loaned him my VBWFPA. Having said that, I only made two contacts. One
was with a TX station on cw and the other was with K3YTR's SGC 2020 on
ssb. It looked like rain earlier in the afternoon, but then the sun came
out and we had a beautiful night watching a full moon rise over the
valley from the mountain top. Talking about K3YTR, this guy knows how to
operate in the field! Ed, K3YTR, had a three sided tent with a small
lounge chair in it. he also had a small Pro Cat Heater blowing on him to
keep him warm. I looked over at him and there he was sitting on a lounge
chair drinking coffee, heat blowing on him, no jacket on and a cooler of
food at his feet!  All he needed was a flower shirt and a straw skirt!
Craig, WB3GCK, operated on 30m cw and made a few contacts with his
inverted vee. Ron, WB3AAL, was in his tent with the door zipped up due
to wind in his face. Mark, NK8Q, tried out his new Elecraft K2 on cw and
I could see in his face that he was loving it!

Now lets talk about the hike up the mountain with Ron and myself WA3WSJ.
We started in the Hamburg Reservoir Parking Lot, but we decided to take
the AT up the mountain to the rock. I had a 45lb. pack on my back - this
was to heavy for me. I like to stay around 30 -35lbs. The AT was
relatively dry, but this trail is very steep! When we reached the top, I
asked Ron, WB3AAL, how long it took us?  I was very surprised when he
said 1hr 5 minutes!  No wonder my legs were tired up top - two miles up
a steep trail with a heavy pack in a little over an hour!  While we were
setting up our tents, a front came through and the temperature dropped
and the wind came up. I thought for sure it was going to rain, but no
rain.

As I went from one polar bear to another, the story was the same. Each
one of them was having a ball. Later I walked out to Pulpit Rock and saw
Matt, KB3JJV, Steve's son just sitting on the rock enjoying the view.
Full moon over the valley with all the small town lights on - yes I had
a hard time leaving that spot.  There was Matt, 2M HT in his hand making
contacts with a Full Worm Moon directly over him!

Around 8pm we all packed up and headed down the mountain to the local
pizza place and enjoyed the company of each other. I eat a chicken
cheese steak and drink some beer to wash it down - boy that beer tasted
good!  Sometime going on 10pm we all headed home with fond memories of
another Pulpit Rock Polar Bear Event. To all who worked a polar bear,
send your log to me for your certificate. To all who missed us, I know I
will go back to Pulpit Rock to operate in the near future.  To my fellow
polar bears in each state, thank you all for making this event something
to remember.  I will never forget you guys and your hats won't let me
forget!  By the way, if you operated as a polar bear and want a hat,
email me and I will hook you up with the company that makes them.  The
eyes on that polar bear just stair right through you- hi! We took a
bunch of pictures and will post them on the web soon. I will leave you
all with this thought:

Life is Short so Enjoy!

72,
Ed, WA3WSJ
Polar Bear #1
