It doesn't have to work as a filter either! It just needs to give some
audio gain

You could always copy the preamp section of the KAF2 on a
small piece of .1" perf board and install it on the audio
filter headers.  It would be all of one IC and half a dozen
leaded components.  My guess is that you could do it all for
less than $20 even if you needed to buy all new parts at
Radio Shack.

I might have one ... I know that sounds funny but it's true.  I don't
have time now, but after the Cal QSO Party next weekend, if you haven't
found one and remind me, I'll look in my Misc Elecraft box.  Sometimes I
forget I have something and buy it again. I'm sure I'm the only one. :-)
