Hi Frank,
I'd consider 80M, particularly between 3550 and 3560.
There are several groups that inhabit this area:
FISTS, NAQCC and QRPers. There's usually a couple QSOs
going on and you can find new CW ops as well as
oldtimers to build your confidence and speed.
40M is also popular (7025 to 7060), but you can run
into BC and SSB interference on popular frequencies
and times. It is more of a challenge. There's a lot of
QRP action here.
30M is a good option also. You have a shot at DX, it's
not too crowded and QRM is less likely from non-ham
sources.
