The whole VFO and memory management in the K3 is badly implemented.
Other rigs have a V/M button (or similar) and also either operate in 1 MHz steps or ham band increments, instantly returning to steps of each ham band by default. Two examples before I get off my soapbox: 1. If you recall a memory to check the VFO accuracy at 50 MHz against your shack frequency standard (for example), you could move from where you are now to one of the memories with 50.000 MHz CW stored, but how do you go back to where you were with the K3? With a V/M switch you could instantly go back to where you came from... 2. If you move off 7 MHz to the 9 MHz broadcast band, that band "hijacks" the 10 MHz band on the K3... Other rigs return to switching in ham band increments (example the TS480). Sorry to grumble, but the K3 is now 6 months old and creaking at the seams in a few areas! 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 ================== Well, for instance, if VFO A in the 40 meter band had a 60 meter frequency and VFO B had a 40 meter frequency, I would press the A/B button to swap the VFO's. At this point VFO A now contains a 40 meter frequency and VFO B would have a 60 meter frequency. I would then press A>B to load VFO B with VFO A's 40 meter frequency. Now both VFOs will have 40 meter frequencies loaded. Come to think of it, I also saw mismatched VFOs in the 30 meter band too after updating the F/M code. I don't recall if I see this every time I update the code or if it sometimes works okay. I will have to pay better attention I guess. Dave,
We'll take your comments on this constructively (as input to future firmware revisions). The present front panel layout and functionality was carefully crafted over a full year, then vetted by about a dozen very smart contest/DX operators, but of course it can never achieve perfection on all counts. There's a finite amount of space and controls available. Meanwhile, feel free to suggest very specific changes in the way the existing switches and knobs are used. Regarding how the VFOs behave when set to two different bands: That will all change with the release of the subreceiver. Again, I'd welcome your input. One option is to "spawn" non-ham tuning ranges as required, avoiding "hijacking" of the ham bands, but I haven't tried this yet. 73, Wayne N6KR _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
