Wide SSB caps or not?

Darwin, Keith
So guys, I just ordered the SSB board and the 100 watt PA.  I also
ordered the wide SSB caps.  Should I put them in or leave them out?

Can you hear the difference between 2.4 KHz and 2.6 KHz on receive?  On
transmit?

SSB is only about 5% of my operating time.  I'll dabble in 'phone here
and there.  Everything from contests to DX to rag chewing.

Kieth,

If you have the KDSP2 installed, its SSB low pass filter function cuts off
the high frequency end of the 2.6 kHz filter, and you end up with about a
2.4 kHz bandwidth for receive anyway.

What I am saying is that the 2.4 is about ideal for receive.  If you want a
more Hi-Fi transmitted signal, then the 2.6 will give you a bit more
bandwidth in your transmitted signal.

Without the KDSP2, the 2.6 kHz will give you a wider receive bandwidth, and
signals tune a little easier as a result, but you have 200 Hz more high
frequency noise along with the signal which may negate the advantages.  The
choice depends on your ears and your tastes.

In reply to this post by Darwin, Keith
I found that the wider filter gave me more flexibility for adjusting the
FL1/OPT1 BFO frequency for the transmit audio I liked best. The wider filter
does allow more HF response, which shows up as high frequency noise on
receive, so I set FL2 to use the OPT1 filter too but with the BFO adjusted
to shift the bandpass for more low and less high frequency response. That
gives me a great deal of control over the sound of other station's signals
that I may find are a bit too "bright" (lows cut off).

Since the FL1 settings are those used automatically for xmit, choosing
different setups for the other filters does not change the transmit audio.

RE: Wide SSB caps or not?

Darwin, Keith
Tnx Don & Ron,

Well, I ordered the cap kit along with the SSB option so the real
question is whether or not to put 'em in.  In my case, I have external
EQ and AF filtering so I can tailor the response of my mic to make it
narrow if I need to focus the energy for QRP work and I can roll off the
highs if the hiss is too much on receive.

I think the wide option will give me the potential for a better sounding
rig so I'll probably go that way.

Tnx!
