Wilderness Alert: WB3AAL on the Appalachian trail

WB3AAL
Hello,

August 26, 2006 I will be out on the Appalachian Trail. I will be just
north of Hamburg, PA at the Pulpit Rock area. I should be on the air around
18:00 UTC.

I will be using my K1 on 40, 30, 20 & 15 meters. Look for me around the
usual QRP frequencies.

Re: Wilderness Alert: WB3AAL on the Appalachian trail

WB3AAL
Hello,

After having a Great lunch on the Appalachian Trail at the Port Clinton
hotel in Port Clinton, PA I made my way to the parking lot at the base of
the mountain. As I started hiking the weather was humid and overcast. As I
made my way up to Pulpit Rock on the Appalachian Trail north of Hamburg, PA
the fine mist was becoming predominant.

Usually the hike takes about 45 to 50 minutes straight up the mountain.
This was my first hike up since the winter and I could tell I was a little
out of shape. But to my surprise I made it up to the top in 35 minutes. I
found an old section of the AT that is no longer being used. It was a direct
route straight up the mountain on moss covered rocks, this was very slippery
with the fine mist that was falling. When I took this route I seen two
hikers that were about 100 yards ahead of me on the road. When I came out on
the road again I was about 1/4 mile in front of them.  This was very
exciting because I found an old trail that is new one for me. Funny thing is
that it took 35 minutes to hike up and 40 minutes to hike down the mountain.
I estimated that the short cut took about 3/4 of a mile of the hike.

After I got to Pulpit Rock the fog and mist was so heavy I could only see a
few of the building up there. I proceeded to setup my K1 and the vertical.
When the station was complete I started calling CQ around 17:50 UTC. Then
Mark, NK8Q, appeared out of the fog. Mark drove up for an astronomical
meeting on a new telescope. We chatted while I was calling CQ.

Only made 2 QSO's on 20 meters before I decided to call it quits due to the
mist becoming heavier. I worked VA6RF in AB and W4RMM in AL. The bands
seemed like they were is good shape and I wish I could have stayed for a few
hours. But I was already soaked and the temperature was dropping. It was
about 71'F and it dropped to 68'F when I packed up and hiked home.

On my hike down the mountains I noticed there were some campers in a Water
Shed Area that was restricted. Signs are posted in the area stating No
Camping and No Fires. They had one roaring fire going and they were cutting
more wood. When I arrived at my car I called the local law enforcement and
notified they of what was going on in the area. I seen a police car driving
up the road about 2 miles away so I knew where he was heading.

Hopefully I will be hiking the AT in PA in Sept and October. I am going to
plan on some over night hikes with the K1.

Happy trails and thanks for the QSO's.
