Hello,
Thank you for all of the great responses I have received. The copy is not an OEM specifically for one machine. I'm not trying to use it on two machines at the same time, my old one broke. It gives me a message that I have 30 days to register it before it stops functioning. I have spent the last couple of hours Googling for information on Ubuntu. Since this PC will only be used in my shack for radio stuff, I'm going to load Ubuntu and forget about Microsoft (like getting a 600 pound gorilla off my back). All of the software (including the Ubuntu OS), is free, no registration. Software for operating digital modes, K2 controller software, logging programs etc are available for download. It looks like a good way to go for me. DW,
Just walk through the authorization steps - if you don't have an internet connection, use the phone. I have done it many times. The only thing they want to know is how many machines your copy is running on - if the answer is 1, they will authorize it. It sometimes takes a bit of effort, but it gets the job done - and legally. I have done it several times when a motherboard or hard drive has died - in addition to my own 5 XP machines, I maintain 10 XP computers on our church network, and I have had to re-load XP several times over the past few years - the process may be a bit lengthy, but never any real problem. While Ubuntu is a viable alternative, there are several applications that I like (Ham Radio Deluxe for instance) that will not work on Ubuntu, so I stick with Windows 2K and XP. 73, Don W3FPR DW Holtman wrote: > Hello, > > Thank you for all of the great responses I have received. > > > The copy is not an OEM specifically for one machine. I'm even more retro on that - my main Ham packet/Pactor program is PK Gold, which was developed for "real DOS" and doesn't play well with the "DOS equivalent" on WinXP. That's why I have a separate Win2K machine for that program. BTW - I added your name to our "get well prayer" list at our congregation while you were recuperating and it's good to see you back. --- 73 de K2ASP - Phil Kane Elecraft K2/100 s/n 5402 _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Whe M$ no longer supports reinstallation of XP, the legal status of the cracked authorization that's available with searching will be interesting. No one contracted with XP to a deliberately broken so called operating system; this is something that M$ did after the fact. My rant below is not aimed at Don: it's just a fact. Ian, G4ICV, AB2GR, K2 #4962 gnu/linux tinkerer since a 0.9 kernel sometime in 1992, User since 1.0.9 and 1.1.18 kernels in Slackware 1994, Linux-FT lasermoon 1995, Redhat 4.2 (spit) sometime in 1997, manual update from 1.2 13 to 2.0.0 in 1998, Debian fanatic 1998 to recently, FreeBSD 3.4 January 2000 to 6.2 lately, kubuntu 7.10 currently and strongly considering Gentoo. Unix pre linux. Get out of my face Micro$oft. -- _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
