Winmor and K3

Andrew Meyer
I want to use the K3 and my dedicated laptop which has a Soundmax Digital
Audio soundcard for Winmor.  From the K3 manual, it seems like it's a simple
matter of hooking the computer and K3 together correctly, doing the K3
config, and of course having the Winmor software installed.  From what I can
tell, it appears that the K3 is suitably isolated from the computer and it
all should work.  If any of the foregoing assumptions are incorrect, please
tell me.

My main reason for this email to the reflector, is for help on the cable
types and connections and/or an article that explains the setup and
configuration that works.  I had considered using a Signal Link but is there
really any reason to do so?

In your case, there is no reason unless the K3's turn around time is too slow for Winmor when using the built-in VOX.  You'll have to check that part out.

The SignaLink provides a VOX based PTT (which the K3 already has) and transformer isolation (which the K3 already has).  So all you really need is a sound card for the K3.

By the way, for anyone looking for a good sound card for the LP-PAN, keep your eyes open for the E-MU 0204.  This is pretty much an E-MU 0404 in a smaller box (and with front facing controls).  It lacks the S/PDIF ports and possibly no 48 volt phantom power (neither of which you need for the LP-PAN).  Otherwise, the specs mirrors the specs of the E-MU 0404.

The 0204 has been announced but I have not seen any one selling it yet.  It should come in under US $130 (the E-MU 0404 goes for around $200, so you save some money, save some desk space and not lose anything in performance).

Plain ordinary cabling of good quality is all you need, provided that
you do the simple bonding from chassis to chassis of all interconnected
equipment described in my tutorial on Interfacing ham gear to
computers.  While my material is written for SSB, RTTY, and PSK with an
emphasis on contesting, all the principles apply 100% to your application.

See http://audiosystemsgroup.com/HamInterfacing.pdf   for a Power Point
that I've used for several presentations at clubs and hamfests, and

http://audiosystemsgroup.com/RFI-Ham.pdf  for the same material in text
form.  It's in the chapter on "Solving Problems In the Shack."

I have an E-MU 0204 on order, Chen. I paid $130. It looks to me like an 0202 with two additional outputs. It has the same specs and ADC as the 0202, and apparently replaces the 0202. Once I test and verify it's operation, I expect it will become the standard card for LP-PAN. I also expect the price to drop over the next year to the $100 range.
