Depends on what your needs are and the environment.  We are still using laptops running 2000 pro for logging at field day.  Work great.

One problem with perpetual licenses is that they create no ongoing cash flow.  To get more money you need people to buy new product.  Thus it makes business sense to obsolete the old stuff as soon as you can without angering the customer base.  Some of us drive 20 year old cars around town.  As long as they do what is needed there is no need to buy new no matter how much the dealers try to convince us that our image is damaged by the rust spots and holes.

Re: XP

How long will it be before Microsoft ditches Windows 7 users forcing them to
delve into the NEW MAZE of Windows 8?  Why does EVERYTHING have to be
completely "changed" (It so seems to us loons who are not "computer geeks")
and are encumbered with the huge task of finding out where everything is (if
it is actually still there!)    Mostly for the purpose of refilling the
Microsoft coffers!!!
My old Millenium edition of Windows was a mess!  I dodged "Vista" which
turned a lot of folks upside down.  My "XP" machine turned me upside down
until I managed to change it to look like the old Windows 98 layout.  If I
try that with Windows 7, I have to buy the "top end" edition which I DON'T
NEED!  Windows 7 "works" great once you partially understand it and where
your old haunts are in it, but it is VERY confusing to actually get where
you want to go easily!  I AM NOT A VERY GOOD PUZZLE ASSEMBLER!  I am almost
ready to go back to MS/DOS at times!!!!!  I gather Windows 8 is a "new
maze"!  Do we have to go thru this crap every few years or when we buy a new
computer?

You can probably answer your own question by looking at the life of XP.
There have been 3 generations of Windows since XP, which was last produced
in late 2006. If the two generations between XP and Win 8 are each
supported for 6 years after last production date, you will have a dozen
years to bring your software, hardware, and other things up to date.
Presumably by 2024 there will be other problems to worry about.

Re: XP

JP O'Connor
Windows 7 SP1 will have full support expire on January 12, 2015
and extended support expire on January 14, 2020. (Windows XP SP3 full
support is expired and it is in extended support until April 8, 2014.)

HOWEVER: Because Win 7 is still being sold, and because there may
be additional Service Packs in the future (SP2, etc.), the actual date for
the "last" version of Win 7 is yet to be determined and MIGHT be later.
Given the quick introduction of Win 8, who knows beyond the dates already
announced.

For details, see:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/lifecycle

A PC World article on  the same topic:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2010820/how-long-will-microsoft-support-windows-7.html

Before you complain and run off to Apple, they have somewhat similar
policies. (Certainly not identical, of course.) Each operating system and
vendor has its merits - and its issues. YMMV so chose what is best for you,
and each of us will do the same. Regardless, above are the Microsoft dates.

Re: XP

David Gilbert

I must have missed the point here.  Is someone concerned that one or
more of the K3 or KX3 utility applications won't work with Windows 7 or
Windows 8?  And even if that were the case (which I'm certain it is
not), what makes anyone think that "no longer supported" means that XP
will no longer work?

Same for me. BUT -- when one of my old laptops failed (electrically,
wouldn't turn on) on our California QSO Party county expedition last
month, one of the guys fired up his much newer laptop. While the
keyboard and mouse stunk, the screen was a LOT brighter than my trusty
five year old Thinkpads.  Since screen brightness is often a major
problem in sunlight, even inside a tent, it has me thinking about
popping for a newer model.  Even if I do have to put up with a new OS.

Naw, the question was how are we gonna survive in 2020 (or 2024, or
whenever) when our familiar OS world comes to an end. If it does.

In reply to this post by David Christ
There will plenty of problems when you want to use "ANY" new programs which
BTW have advanced past the stuff that was made for XP by a long shot. You
will only be using very old programs as everything has moved or moving
quickly to 64 bit and at least quad core processors to power them.

I still have 2 old XP service pack # machines running one an email server
and the other for my weather station. The other 6 are all Win7 machines
desktops and 2 laptops except for my iPad's and iPhones they run other OS's.

There are new logging programs that can do so many things now that take
advantage of more processing power.

One problem with perpetual licenses is that they create no ongoing cash
flow.  To get more money you need people to buy new product.  Thus it makes
business sense to obsolete the old stuff as soon as you can without angering
the customer base.  Some of us drive 20 year old cars around town.  As long
as they do what is needed there is no need to buy new no matter how much the
dealers try to convince us that our image is damaged by the rust spots and
holes.

We are selling win8 at my "big-box" workplace.  All the laptops with
win7 were shipped back and replaced with new ones having
win8.  Frankly win8 looks alot like what is running on Ipad.

Interestingly, I ran into a new issue:  modems that were rated for
windows (up to Seven) are not rated to run win8  - huh?  I never
figured that they were OS sensitive.  All our inventory is outdated
as a result.  Wonder when the "buyers" at my "big-box" store figure that out?

I only run XP32 on my computers (except one old P90 IBM Thinkpad that
still has win95 but is never run online).  Recently re-built one of
my desktop's and discovered IE 6.0 was under horrendous attack when
connected online.  I quickly upgraded to sp3 which loaded IE 8.0
which stopped the onslaught.

I have to run with a anti-maleware and pc cleanup sw to keep the crap
level down that constantly streams in.  I have five of these programs
in addition to antivirus sw.  I see there is now a college to train
cyber-sleuths for NSA, CIA, FBI and Homeland security.  What a world?

Perhaps the Mayan calendar merely presages the end of Microsoft.  :)

Couple of years ago I bought a new Dell Precision Tower (to run digital
data through my K2, of course) and was given the choice of Win7 or XP.
I chose XP, but they still sent me legal disks for Win7 reinstall.  I
pray that I don't have to install it for any reason.  My wife's Dell
laptop has Win7 and I am not comfortable with it whenever I have to
"administrate" something on it.
