[XV222] Ease of assembly?

Jim Low man
I suppose this question pertains to any of the XV-series transverters.

I understand that there are no SMT parts to install; only through-hole
components.

How long should the assembly/alignment/testing take?
I've been assembling kits since the Heathkit days.

This looks like an excellent way to get on 222 MHz, although I'm a bit
on the fence.
I would need to buy the transverter interface module for the K3, so
we're looking
at almost $500 without an antenna for this band.
As I understand it, there is little activity on SSB on 222 MHz except in
contests,
which is surprising given the population of the greater LA/OC area.
At the SCCC meeting in September, our Division Director and Vice
Director said
that it wasn't this way 10 years ago.

Any help with my original question will be greatly appreciated.
I know that you can't help with the scarcity of stations on the band in
this area.  :-)

Jim.

Thru-hole only.  If you are reasonaly efficient, it will take you from 4
to 6 hours to finish the assembly.

Somewhat related to this question.  Will the Elecraft line of transverters
work with other brands/makes/models of radios?  Specifically, I have an Icom
(seriously considering an Elecraft in the near future though) that is an
HF/VHF/UHF all mode radio but does not include the 222 MHz band.  There is
some limited activity on that band locally and I would like to try operating
there if possible.

Thanks in advance.

You can use the transverters with most any radio, and the manual show how
to interface it.

Having had Heathkit building experience, I would agree with the Oct 2004 QST review's estimated 15-20 hours for assembly. I am up to page 30 of the assembly manual after 7 hours, and can only imagine doing it much faster if my eyesight was sharp enough not to need a magnifying lens. I've posted an unboxing video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdJzRTR7DDU and still photos at https://picasaweb.google.com/114032640816757126398/ElecraftXV144TransverterKit
