The response and high output level of the CM500's mic is just what the K2 needs! Got mine a couple of days ago and ran some on the air tests with my favorite audio critic and he liked it a lot once we got the EQ right for me.
However, I have a question about the mic connector. It's a stereo plug (why I don't know except to perhaps make it more compatible with a PC sound card) and the mic input on the K3 is Mono. Should I use a mono adaptor or not? Doesn't seem to matter but I am worried about possible damage to the K3 since I have heard that at one time that mis-match was a problem with the Line In connector. I wouldn't bother with a mono adapter.
If I read the KIO3 schematic correctly, the K3's back-panel microphone connector and Line In connector are stereo jacks with only the tip wired. I think the damage you refer to might have been from a mono speaker plug that shorts one side of the speaker amplifier to ground. I have one and the headphones are pretty good. However, there is RF pickup with high power on 20m. Probably KIO3 needs to be modified. There is no trace of RF pickup with Heil HC5.

It could also be used to carry shielded balanced audio wiring. With this mic, the tip is audio high, the sleeve is audio return and cable shield, and the ring is +Vdc to power the tiny impedance converter inside the mic. Jim,
I thought that too but what's puzzling is that the mic gets bias even with the mono adaptor in line. If its like most current computer microphones tip and ring are connected in parallel. 73, ... Thanks for all the help guys. I have taken the mono adaptor out of the line and will carry on enjoying the radio and the CM500.

There's a wide variation in how computer sound cards are wired, so Yamaha provides adapters that make the mic work with as many of them as possible. There are several wiring tricks that can be played to provide the needed bias current. Since the CM500 works when plugged straight into my computers and the K3, I haven't bothered to study what those adapters do. 73, Jim K9YC >Rick >K6LE >On 12/23/2009, at 9:11 , Jim Brown wrote: >> On Wed, 23 Dec 2009 16:56:44 -0800, K6LE wrote: >> >>> It's a stereo plug >> >> No, it's not a "stereo" plug, it's a 3-circuit plug the CAN be used >> for stereo, or can be used for other things like an electret mic. Ignacy,
I've found that it helps to put a small clip-on ferrite choke RIGHT AT the end of the CM500 mike boom, just before the actual electret element. My problem is also 20 meters. 73, Oliver W6ODJ On 23 Dec 2009, at 6:03 PM, Ignacy wrote: > > I have one and the headphones are pretty good. However, there is RF pickup > with high power on 20m.
