I have a Ten Tec 1340 (4 Watts) and it is a good rig after making several
modifications. Add a 10 turn pot for the VFO and Dave K1SWL Frequency
Mite audible frequency readout and other simple modifications to improve
the transmitter stability and get rid of popping in the received audio
during keying all very well documented on the web by Monty N5ESE .
Also have a Wilderness Radio NORCAL 40 (2 Watts) which benefits by adding
a 10 turn pot and audible frequency readout which costs about $70 more
than the the Ten Tec with similar mods. This has a very clean design and
is easily upgradable and servicable. It was designed Wayne N6KR one of
the founders of Elecraft.
There is also a interesting low cost $30 multimode software defined
radio kit RXTX 6.2 (1 Watt) that I just completed by Tony KB9YIG but it
requires hookup to a PC soundcard with free software.
Good luck on making your decision

Bob Johansen WB2SRF
