Yes Steve, don't be alarmed. It is totally normal, you are not in
danger, only good will happen, although this is unknown to those devoid of Elecraft radios. Since my learning curve on new radios is about one button/knob/menu setting every six months or so, the K2 was great! Not that I've mastered it all, but it sure does work! Hi all,
I have been doing CW nets on 40 meters for a few weeks with a lot of success. I went down to 80 meters just now to try an 80 meter cw net, and I am hearing all these NC contest stations. One guy sounds like a buzzsaw. I try to tune him in but the signal quality is awlful. So I go up 5 kHz and find another raspy station... and another... and another. All of 80 meters sounds raspy, even the lsb guys. I go to 40m and 20 meters and the signals seem fine. The filters seem like they are in top shape also. The rig is a K2(#402)/100 with KAT100 and KDSP. Never experienced a problem until now. Any ideas? Steve, W2MY -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Probably totally unrelated, but I once heard something like that (using a
different radio) that was caused by the noise blanker being on and picking up a lot of impulse noise on the band. It was most noticed on strong signals 73/72 - Mike WA8BXN -------Original Message------- From: Steven Pituch Date: 02/26/06 21:06:07 To: 'Elecraft Reflector' Subject: [Elecraft] Raspy sounds on 80 meters Hi all, I have been doing CW nets on 40 meters for a few weeks with a lot of success. That can also be caused by having a strong signal from a BC band station in
the neighborhood. The noise blanker, in order to do it's thing, MUST turn the I.F. signal path off an on at a fairly high rate of speed (once per pulse of noise). That process turns it into a mixer, just looking for signals to mix together to produce an endless array of strange-sounding effects. That's why the manual advises using the noise limiter ONLY when it's really needed! As you get closer to the BC Band it's easier for a strong broadcast signal to put enough RF into the front end for a problem-causing amount to make it in where it can do mischief. Some of our European friends have to cope with that sort of stuff around 40 meters because of their proximity to many of those huge SW broadcasting stations. Another possibility to investigate is a transformer on the operating table. Some ops have reported hearing a buzz or 'raspiness' on signals more on one band than others due to AC magnetic fields around the K2. Steve - Most likely a magnetic field problem.
I had a similar experience. I've learned to keep the Titan II and its huge transformer at least 2 feet from the K2 when it is turned on etc. But I got caught recently with a Radio Shack giant LED 24 hour clock. It is the same width as the K2 and looks really slick on top of it. After scratching my head trying to move the rotator control box, the Ten-Tec 1amp supply and its transformer away from the K2 I finally lifted up the clock...the distortion went a way. There must be a decent sized transformer in the bottom of the clock case. Have you moved anything closer to the K2 than before? I wonder if this can be turned into a "feature" so we can add 10M FM to the K2 from an external audio signal fed into a big coupling coil under the K2? <<<<<<< THIS IS A JOKE NOT A FEATURE REQUEST!! 73 de Tom K2TA ----- Original Message ----- From: "Steven Pituch" <[hidden email]> To: "'Elecraft Reflector'" <[hidden email]> Sent: Sunday, February 26, 2006 9:04 PM Subject: [Elecraft] Raspy sounds on 80 meters > Hi all, > I have been doing CW nets on 40 meters for a few weeks with a lot of > success. Hi all,
Thanks for the feedback on my problem. I had just inserted a wattmeter between my KAT100 and KPA100 in the EC2 case. So I immediately suspected that. But when I removed it the buzz remained. The Astron VS-35M is close to my EC2 but never had a problem before. I was about to run the rig from golf cart batteries when it suddenly hit me. That morning I had plugged between the AC line and the VS-35M an ICE Model 475 "AC Line RFI/Noise Filter & Overvoltage assembly", that I had purchased at the local hamfest for $2. I even took it apart to inspect it. Its in an aluminum case. When I removed this device, the buzz went away. Its located about 6 feet away from the EC2 and K2. So now I have a nice $2 aluminum case for my next QRP project. ;8) Thanks again, Steve, W2MY -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition.
