com0com N1MM and CWSkimmer

PE3V
I am trying to setup a serial connection between an Elecraft K3, CWSkimmer and
N1MM using com0com/hub4com.

I don't get it working. Anyone on this forum who got this working properly?

Thanks Eric PE3V (ex PA3FKN)

PS I tried LP Bridge and that's working fine, but com0com looks a little bit
more ligthweigth .... (and if I can get it working I also have the possibility
to run the serial ports over ethernet)

I bought an RS-232 card and gave up on the USB converter.

I also use a serial port (COM1) for communication between te K3 and my computer. The thing is that I have N1MM and CWSkimmer running at the same time. They both need information from the K3 (like current frequency).
I need some splitter which sends the QRG to both N1MM and CWSkimmer.
thanks,

I'm not sure it's really any "lighter" than LP-Bridge... it's just
different. You'd have to create two com0com pairs (one for N1MM Logger
and one for CW Skimmer), then configure hub4com to connect the other
ends of those two pairs, and the "real" K3 COM port together. I played
with hub4com a bit some time ago, but don't recall if I ever tried
this combination. How far did you get with it?

BTW, the big difference between this and LP-Bridge is that there's a
possibility for multiple applications to issue commands to the K3 at
the same time, with unexpected results. LP-Bridge has lots of "special
intelligence" to handle this, where hub4com has no idea about the
meaning of messages it's passing back and forth....

LP Bridge works fine! com0com looks more ligthweigth to me and gives me the possibility to run CWSkimmer on another PC the N1MM computer.

Re: com0com N1MM and CWSkimmer

In reply to this post by Iain MacDonnell - N6ML-2

Iain,
I tried the GPS HUB example (http://com0com.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/com0com/hub4com/ReadMe.txt) from hub4com (2 com0com pairs and hub4com).
As soon as I started the hub4com the TRX started sending (PTT + KEY). No QRG info and the keydown situation didn't stop until I killed the hub4com process.
Running CWSkimmer degrades the N1MM performance of my PC. Running CWSkimmer on a separate PC could solve this issue.
Thanks,
Eric PE3V

There is also VSPE for general purpose serial port virtualization.

I use LP Bridge for RMS Express.  It expects separate control and keying ports.

Good luck!

I will have a look into VSPE. Looks like it also has ethernet functionality.

Hi Eric,

Try something along these lines....

hub4com --baud=38400 --octs=off --stop=2 --no-default-fc-route=All:All
--route=All:All --create-filter=pinmap:"--rts=!connect --dtr=!connect"
--add-filters=0:pinmap COM1 \\.\CNCB0 \\.\CNCB1

Not well-tested, but might get you a bit further along...

I haven't been following this thread completely but I've been running Skimmer and N1MM simultaneously via LP-Bridge for several years with no problems.  Below is an example of them working together with an AutoHotKey script which allows me to jump the K3 up or down to adjacent Skimmer decoder dots with a mouse wheel.  A key aspect of this is that focus is always returned to N1MM after frequency jumps.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZDXuOgUQJ0  (SAC contest example)

My old Pentium IV (2.8 GHz) XP CPU and Audiophile 2496 typically run at about 20-30% CPU utilization and I've had no problems with both N1MM and Skimmer getting frequency information, as you can see in the videos.

I think this is a question for the N1MM Yahoo group.  Have you tried there?

Tried the yahoo groups also, but no response there yet.

You need to use Wintelnetx, not Com0Com... With Wintelnetx, you can
combine Skimmer and Cluster into N1MM.

That's not the problem, Dave. The problem is that both N1MM Logger and
CW Skimmer expect to be able to access the K3's "rig-control" COM port
at the same time, to track the K3's current frequency (etc).

Re: com0com N1MM and CWSkimmer

Dave Johnson
Depends how you run Skimmer, I use a Microtelecom Perseus under direct
control of Skimmer. Perseus is in parallel with my K3 via the RF
IN/OUT sockets and a ferrite splitter. Perseus and Skimmer report to
Wintelnetx as does the cluster, both are combined in Wintelnetx. You
then log into Wintelnetx with N1MM via the Telnet function. N1MM
controls the K3.

Clicking on the band map of N1MM takes the K3 to the spotted stations
frequency...
