contest reflections on K2 - addendum

Bill W4ZV
KR2Q:

 >1.  QSK.  This is user skill level dependent.  If you do 20 wpm or
less, the K2 QSK may be fine for you.  During contesting, I am going
at least 32-34 wpm, and not uncommonly at 40wpm.

Hmmm...guess I should return the stack of plaques I've
won over the years since I have NEVER used QSK.  This includes
all 6 current USA records for CQ WW, ARRL DX and CQ WPX on
10m, both CW and SSB.  I also normally compare favorably with
the top USA multi-multi stations:

                 http://users.vnet.net/btippett/new_page_6.htm

 >2.  Stable power output.  I use multiple antennas PER BAND.
So whenever I change antennas, I have to hit TUNE.

         You need a peak-responding meter like a Mirage MP1.
No need to hit TUNE since it responds quite well to fast CW.

 >3.  AGC.  Using the K2 S meter, signals here range from zero S units
on the meter (even though atmospheric noise is supposed to be S1) to
40 or even 60 over 9 (all LEDs lit up).  A 40 over 9 signal is VERY
LOUD in the phones while S1 is not.

Orion's flat AGC response was a major dislike
by operators at W8JI in multiop 160 contests.  Yaesu and
Ten-Tec have both now added Sloped AGC options to their
flat responses.  See K8ZOA's interesting results below:

http://mailman.qth.net/pipermail/elecraft/2007-May/067727.html

         As you said above..."different strokes".

                                 73,  Bill  W4ZV

K2's break-in

Ken Kopp
I'm not a (very) well-known contester ... C6, 4M5I, others ....
VP5PP (2nd) in world) in ARRL CW DX, ARRL 160 CW
1st place NW Division, many CW SS wins, etc.

My K2's works break-in fine, BUT, I can't imagine the nerve-
wracking, mind-numbing use of full break-in for a contest! Wow!
I suppose one might hear an "intruder" on one's frequency, but
most of us would just plod along and ignore him ... (:-))  Can't
think of much else gained by full break-in.

As Bill says ... different strokes.  (:-))

I can - I've done it. I'm not a big-gun contester by any means, and do a lot
more H&P than running a freq.

I found it good in the following situations:

1) When doing hunt&pounce and trying to bust a pileup, QSK lets me hear when
the station calling answers somebody else, and so I don't waste time or add to
the QRM, I just stop sending. With two VFOs, I'll leave one VFO on the pileup
and use the other to seek new ones.

2) If I'm holding a frequency and a big gun plops down nearby, I know it
right away and don't waste time trying to fight him.

Re: K2's break-in

Joe-aa4nn
I think QSK in hunt&peck is also useless
unless you are sending 15 wpm.  With short
calls like n2ey, QSK hardly benefits to try
and stop sending when 'he' calls someone else.
With short calls you are already done., so what's
the point?

One VFO on the pileup and the other on H&P,
well, what's QSK got to do with all that?

Hi Ken,
When I am running I agree with you. But when I am chasing someone I find QSK
to be very helpful. Sometimes you can work someone and exchange reports
while someone without QSK is still calling and not realizing what just
happened.

RE: K2's break-in

Darwin, Keith

It's funny how different folks really do like (and need) different
things.

K2 QSK:  I love it.  It is quiet.  I've had lots of TT stuff and never
understood the rant about how great their QSK was.  To me it was thumpy
and noisy.  The RX would respond poorly to the sudden rush of incoming
signal and there were switching transients in the headphone monitor that
made the overall experience of carrying on a QSO less than wonderful.
The K2 is much quieter and well behaved.  It sounds great.  I now see
that part of that is that the QSK is a tad on the slow side but so far,
I have not found that to be any sort of limitation.

K2 AGC:  Having a slope to the audio output (more RF in produces more
audio out) sure makes the rig more comfortable to listen to.  S/N ratio
results in an actual difference between the signal and noise in the
cans.  My Kenwood had no slope and the noise between signals was at the
same audio level as the signal.  Tiring to listen to.

As a casual operator and occasional dabbler in contests, the K2 is more
than enough rig!
