de-Solder wick/braid

Lloyd,
  Are you supposed to but the braid *on top* of the iron which is heating the solder you are trying to remove?  

  I always just put the braid on the joint and placed the tip of the soldering iron on top of the braid, heating the braid and the solder.  Would like to know the correct way, I certainly seem to do a lot of solder removal...hi
