e-mail list confusion

Tom KG3V
I keep trying to find a way to sort this list so I can read about K2
stuff, without fishing through hundrds of messages to determine what
is relevant. At one time there was strong guidance to put the radio
family (K1 K2 K3) at the beggining of the Subject line. That is a
great idea, but nobody does it. Would there be any objection to
readers changing thread names to add that?

I have tried filters, but they (at least what my ISP offers) just
don't work very well. You never really know if/where the family name
will be found in messages, and I see more cases recently where it is
challenging to tell what family is being addressed after I read the
message.

Is there any reconsideration of separating the list? It seems llike
there is plenty of traffic to support at least two lists. Anybody can
subscribe to multiple lists, so I don't see how separate lists could
be bad

Thanks and 73,

Tom KG3V

Re: e-mail list confusion

I find most people do put K2, K3 etc in their postings and this is how I do
this in Entiurage, which is the MS Mac equivalent of Outlook, I'm about to
switch to Apple PIM (address book, iCal, Mail) and will do equivalent in
there.

1. using Mail List Manager (you can use rules), set a category of Electraft
on all mail from the Elecraft Reflector

Then rules for any mail marked as Elecraft in step 1 ...
2. if it has K3 in the subject, stop processing more rules
3. if it has K1, KX1 or K2 in the subject, delete it

People have been getting sloppy setting the correct subject line so
users mail filters have something to filter. Maybe it's time for
Elecraft to start rejecting mail not in the proper format.

Re: e-mail list confusion

Ken Kopp-3
Hello Tom, others ...

I sincerely hope Elecraft doesn't use staff time to sort
the list or in some way do "our" job for us.  They
have ... especially now ... far more important matters to
address.

I -want- to read every posting.  The subject matter is
(almost) always of some interest.  Many really would
defy being "hard sorted" by KX1, K1, K2 or K3 related
subjects.

Re: e-mail list confusion

Tom KG3V
Thanks for all the comments. But I stand by my original post. The fact
is that most people are not putting the headers on the Subject line (I
didn't know what to use on this one). I have tried filtering for about
6 months. It does a poor job. There are posts the do not have the
radio in the body either. There is also no way to tell if there is a
post the is aimed at K2 users that mentione the K3 in the body (or
vice versa).

I like the idea of having a mandatory header. That would help. I will
keep trying to filter, but I can't see why a growing list like this
would not subdivide. What is the downside? Of course I respect
Elecraft's decision on the list format, and am just expressing my
opinion (as a very heavy user of e-mail lists).

What about my main question - would there be an objection to
"repliers" changing a thread name to include the proper header (if it
is obvious)?

I have used TBird for about 12 hours now (my old mail client crashed
three days ago and I couldn't resurrect it) and have set up a lot of
filters today.  Yes, it can look for a specific string/phrase in the
body of the text.  My setup, though, was to examine the subject line for
K3 and route it to a separate subfolder.

I was greeted by several hundred messages in this list alone!
