eHam Article

Jeff Davis-26
Folks,

I wrote a short piece about the 'K2 versus all them big new rigs'
several weeks ago, but I guess it isn't going to make it where anyone
can read it on the front page or subsequent pages on eHam.

Perhaps sites that depend on advertising revenue don't like ruffled
vendor feathers? :-)

In any event, you can view and comment on it here:

I found one comment interesting
There is no doubt in my mind that Elecraft rigs are perfectly able to compete
with the "Big Boys" out there.

I would have written something along the lines that it's interesting to see that
the "Big Boys" are now catching up with Elecraft.

I don't see any article there at all - has it been removed?

That's certainly going to hurt eHam's chances of getting more articles from
people.  I didn't read the article but if you start applying censurship, you
lose writers very quickly.  And supporters, I would imagine.

Now if his "advertisers" forced him to remove the article, that is just as
bad.

Just my .02.

Oops - never mind. I just saw the message about it being removed.

How about posting it here for those of us who didn't see it?

I guess I'm having trouble following this thread.  Would someone mind giving
an old guy a summary of what's happening.  It seems that a post to eHam was
critical of eHam so the post was pulled...is that the basics of what's
happening.

Actually, it was this comment, "Perhaps sites that
depend on advertising revenue don't like ruffled
vendor feathers?" -- that is what really did it.
Especially when:

http://www.eham.net/about/showadvertisers

Look seven down, that says it all...

Next time get your facts straight first, Jeff. Then
if you have a question or concern e-mail me privately
and I will be more than happy to let you know
approximately if/when your article will be posted on
eHam's homepage. Like I said, I can only run so many
at a time, and we receive TONS of submissions. And I
would have glady ran yours in just a few more days if
you had just been patient.

Bottom line: You show me some common courtesy and a
little respect and I will happily return it.

Re: eHam Article

No - a post here (the Elecraft mail list) was critical of eHam, so the
author of the critical post had his article pulled from eHam.

Sounds to me like eHam is rather thin-skinned and vindictive.

Folks,

There is nothing spooky or scary going on here.

I submitted an article on July 12 for publication on eHam. If you know
anything about that process it takes time and you also get an
auto-generated response telling you that your article "may" or "may not"
be selected for front page publication.

Given that it has been three weeks, and that other, more recent articles
have been published I just *assumed* that mine was not selected for
publication. They receive a lot of submissions and that wouldn't have
been unusual. So this morning, I sent the link to this list so that even
though the story didn't make the front page, other Elecrafter's could
read it. In my posting, I included the URL and this one comment:

"Perhaps sites that depend on advertising revenue don't like ruffled
vendor feathers? :-)"

I thought that the little smiley guy :-) conveyed that I was joking and
I wasn't actually implying that eHam was doing anything devious in
choosing not to publish the article.

However, the Articles Manager had a much different take on the matter
and proceeded to send me several emails that asked for my "respect" and
my "courtesy" or that article would be pulled. I told him deleting the
article would be fine with me and he has done that. There were several
other messages between us where he sent me the dictionary definition of
the word "libel" and such, and ended it all by saying that I was banned
from posting articles on eHam until I learn to be more courteous, and
that he was deleting any follow-up messages from me, etc.

Obviously I'm not thrilled by all this, and his public posting to this
list was an obvious attempt to "set me straight" in front of a public
audience. I wouldn't have replied at all but I started receiving emails
from this list asking why the link on eHam couldn't be reached and what
all this was about.

I would REALLY appreciate if this could end now. I have always hated OT
posts and long, meandering threads that have no value, and this one
certainly has none at this point.

I apologize to the list for the messages it has already spawned, and
hope that you will take my plea to heart and NOT FOLLOW THIS UP.

Thanks and see you all on the bands!

It is apparently the rant of someone who expected his
timeless prose to show up on eHam as soon as he had
expected. This became a diatribe against eHam and those
nasty old "advertisers" (read  "Evil Large Corporations",
file a complaint with Ralph Nader!). A posting from an
eHame official pointed out that he had many submissions
and couldn't post all of them at the same time and that
this particular submission would have been posted in
a couple of days..but certainly not now!

There really should be no place on this reflector for
such unfounded rants! IMHO.
