Hi,
I have an odd question for the group. As hams age, we begin to notice that our hearing decreases in sensitivity in the higher registers. In a K2, one can easily change the Spot audio frequency downward to accommodate this process. Is it straightforward to adjust the filters so their center frequencies are lower, too? Or am I way off the charts on this one? John AB8O _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Yes, John, both the variable filters and the DSP filters may be
adjusted for center frequency. However, while we older folk may lose our abilities to hear, say, above 4000 Hz, there is not likely to be a significant loss differential in the range for typical side tones, say 550-1000 Hz. This is, after all, roughly in the octave range of C'-C'' on the piano, and isn't really all that high. best wishes, dave belsley, w1euy On Sep 18, 2006, at 8:39 PM, John Wiener wrote: > Hi, > > I have an odd question for the group. > > As hams age, we begin to notice that our hearing decreases in > sensitivity in the higher registers. > In a K2, one can easily change the Spot audio frequency downward to > accommodate this process. > > Is it straightforward to adjust the filters so their center > frequencies are lower, too? > > Or am I way off the charts on this one? > > John > AB8O > _______________________________________________ > Elecraft mailing list > Post to: [hidden email] > You must be a subscriber to post to the list. > Subscriber Info (Addr. John,
Not an odd question at all: Certainly it is possible (and desirable) to center the CW filters at your chosen sidetone pitch. Adjust the BFO frequencies to do just that. Spectrogram is the tool of choice for most folks to adjust the passband positioning. If you have not used it before, I refer you to the info on my website http://w3fpr.qrpradio.com in the K2 dial calibration article, and also to the information that Tom Hammond has on his website www.n0ss.net . Yes it is a straightforward procedure - do not be intimidated by the number of words used to tell folks how to do it - just follow the steps one time through and you will be a pro. 73, Don W3FPR > -----Original Message----- > > I have an odd question for the group. > > John > AB8O > _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Hi John:
I suspect several (probably many) have already beat me to the punch on this one, but... Yes, it's quite easy to change the sidetone and filters to a different frequency. However, it's best (and most easily) accomplished with Spectrogram and your PC sound card connected to the K2. With that combination (and the docs), you can realign the filters in a matter of a few minutes. Spectrogram v5.1.7 (shareware), and the docs are available at www.n0ss.net 73, Tom Hammond N0SS At 07:39 PM 9/18/2006, John Wiener wrote: >Hi, > >I have an odd question for the group. > >As hams age, we begin to notice that our hearing decreases in >sensitivity in the higher registers. >In a K2, one can easily change the Spot audio frequency downward to >accommodate this process. > >Is it straightforward to adjust the filters so their center >frequencies are lower, too? > >Or am I way off the charts on this one? > >John >AB8O >_______________________________________________ >Elecraft mailing list >Post to: [hidden email] >You must be a subscriber to post to the list. >Subscriber Info (Addr. When I did my filter alignment with spectrogram I found the perceived
tone center lowered progressively as I went from wide to narrow. I went back and redid the alignment with spectrogram in logarithm display mode and the tone center became consistent from wide to narrow. - Keith KD1E - - K2 5411 - -----Original Message----- >Is it straightforward to adjust the filters so their center frequencies >are lower, too? > _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
