A weeks back there were some emails about what can and cannot be mounted into the K2.. the tuner and the amp etc. And mounting those into the old retired EC2 enclosure. Etc. Got me to thinking...hey, the K2 I have that has the amp installed internall does not seem to see the tuner in the external small box it is mounted in. Why is that? Probably some menu setting... I just never got back to that when last observed. Well.... first I had to disabuse my memory of what I thought was the case in my memory. First of all, the K2 that I had used portable on weekends before I got the KX3 some years ago - a K2 I KNEW had a working internal tuner was not that K2!! It was a K2/qrp with an internal KAT. It did though have a matching KAT 100 and KPA 100 in an EC2. So that misapprehension gone. Back to the other K2... hooked up the external KAT100... go through menus.... nothing. No antenna tuner detected... none of the ATU menu items present.. only a brief presentation of PA Ant1 message. I ponder this ... read manual... go back... go to secondary Menu re. ATU etc and also find I can reset the constantly running fan since Temp Comp is set at 270 degrees Celcius!! Not by me, I can assure you! Anyhow, I am thinking I KNOW THIS worked when I got it secondhand.... I know it did. Of course I decided to embark on this journey just before Elecraft is closing for Christmas... I accept that.. no big thing... no hurry... its been shelved awhile and I can get back to it later...I only intend to use it later come late Spring as a porch and patio deck rig then. But then I start a wondering.... get out the VOM and check the pins on the DB9 connectors on the cable between K2 and KAt 100. Hmmmm... no continuity on PIN1. Open the DB9 shells and the black wire had broken off of the pin, in spite of there being strain relief on the shell. Solder it up, turn on rig and as the guy two over from first chair in the standard string quartet said: Viola. Now I am mostly saying this only to say... I saw this error nowhere in the Elecraft archives (fair enough... its an oldish setup) nor generally. But moreover HAD I had to wait for Elecraft tech support open in the new year and I felt I had check what I could so far..... I feel strongly that they would have said: Check your cable, I don't think the black wire on PIN1 is communicating. Bright fellows there. Tnx for your time. Maybe this will be useful to someone sometime in the Archives. In any case I gave me something to do after the dog dragged me down a slippery hill. Not broken, but I have a sore leg for a couple weeks indeed.
