flagrantly OT: name of WWII comedian who "...could teach Morse code to a dog...."?

I heard this very funny piece on NPR a couple of years ago about a
40's-era comedian who did skits about military life. In one skit he
played a radio-class instructor disgusted with a new class of
underachieving recruits who were there to learn the code. He chastised
them for not studying while bragging that he could teach anyone the
code, even "a dog," which cracked up the studio audience (or, I'm not
sure which, prompted the laugh-track operator to open it up all the
way).

Being not quite 50, I wasn't there. I bet a few of you were  :)  I
couldn't find his name with a web search. Anyone have a clue?

tnx

Was that Phil Silver????  Not sure if he was 40's era or not, but I used to watch him back in the 50's on TV when I was a kid.

I believe the character he played was "Sergeant Bilko", if memory serves
me -- with big dark rimmed glasses and a balding head.

Wayne,

I haven't seen any responses to your question so I guess you have us all
stumped.  I'm guessing that it was not a 40's era comedian but, more likely,
a 50's era comedian when (as I recall) that kind of schtik started with Bob
Newhart.  I remember listening to an LP at a friends house in the mid 50's
that featured Bob Newhart.  It did not have a radio instructor on it but
otherwise was very similar.

You mean "Phil Silvers", aka "Sgt. Bilko". And yes, it would be
something he would do.

You know that Somebody has a cosmic sense of humor when you notice that
Phil Silvers and the Dalai Lama are from such different cultures,
philosophies and parts of the world, yet look so much alike.

Speaking of Field Day....

Tom-5
In reply to this post by wayne burdick
I know many clubs and groups have very sophisticated logging
programs, but if you are looking for a logging program that is designed
just for Field Day, is exceptionally easy to use, and is FREE, please
look at:

Squirrel Logger located at:

http://www.qsl.net/kc8opv/squirl-fd/

Starting last year, we went around with a memory stick to copy all the
files from the individual laptops. It only takes a few minutes to
process them on any database program.

This is designed by a former member of the Holland ARC, (he has since
moved away). Again, hard to beat the cost.

The only bad news, there are two of us members of K8DAA who will NOT
have the K3's in time for FD. But there is always next year!

(Yes, there will be two K2's).
