I don't frequently comment here on the reflector
(except that we miss Nils, El Gringo Errante) but this
question warrants an on-topic aside.
Ron has mentioned THE truly KEY reason to get the
"second radio." He just doesn't know it yet.
You see, it's not just 80 meters he would gain, it's
MUCH more than that. He gains ALL the other bands the
new rig has, and in the case of the KX-1, more RX
range to boot ... effectively, a new radio ... PLUS a
shop's worth of test gear, as essentially a free
bonus.
Many newer hams marvel at what more seasoned hams can
do, and part of that ability of the tenured amateur is
the chance to use electronic gear, wisely acquired
shack resources, in clever ways. A receiver is a
fantastically useful piece of test equipment. Ergo,
having a "spare" around is so worthwhile as to make
its purchase a no-brainer.
OK, you get the message ... back to attempts in
deciphering 40 WPM CW in CQ WW.
