icom 7700...

Brett gazdzinski-2
Got my AES catalog today and was looking at the new icom 7700.
No price yet, but I see its got relay switched bandpass filters,
3 relay switched roofing filters, 48 volt 200 watt output stage,
2 dsp units, a bandscope built in, and a built in power supply.

Are they taking some of the Elecraft ideas?
What is to stop them from coping the basic K3 design?

No price yet....

RE: icom 7700...

Hi Brett ..

Icom doesn't have the agility to respond to requests or problems from their
customers that Elecraft has.

Icom doesn't have a user group like this one. Look at how long it took Icom
to respond to the need for a "narrow roofing filter" in the 7800; a $13,000
radio. The AFTER-THOUGHT UPGRADE cost the owners $500 and the loss of their
7800 for several weeks, at minimum.

Look at all the constant nagging that Wayne and Eric continue to respond to
during the beta testing of the K3. Do you think the Icom folks would take
time reply to customers and non-customers) while trying to take a product to
market?

Got an idea for a feature you would like to see in future Icom rig. Send the
designer an email (if you can find him) and let me read the response.

Let them copy it. When you buy an Elecraft, you get a lot more than a piece
of hardware. What is that worth?  Have you seen the Chinese rip-off Motorola
RF transistors on the market? Or the rip-off Motorola and Icom VHF-UHF gear?

I could go on; I think you get the idea.

It's going to be over $6000, possibly much more than that, and not have
second receiver. My first reaction was incredulity, followed by
laughter. I can't imagine anyone but the most unfortunate,status-driven
putz would even consider buying a rig for that price that doesn't have
dual receive capability.

I doubt that they're stealing ideas from Elecraft, because if they were
the IC-7700 would be modular and half the price. ;)

RE: icom 7700...

I  think it's a nice looking radio, maybe not as nice as the 756 pro,
but the display looks great.

As for cost, its not so much more than a fully tricked out
K3 without second receiver, if you count the built in power supply,
the 200 watt output power, that a mic is included, and a band scope.

Elecraft may come up with a band scope option at some point,
and what will that cost?

They are still stuck on the 65MHz IF though....

I would/could never pay $6000.00 for a radio, if that's what it
will cost, even used at half price is $3000.00!
