You don't!!!
Depending on linear amplifier compression to control the driver output
level is a sure way to introduce distortion into your transmitter path.
Keep the drive level down to the point where the amplifier just peaks to
max output or below that level and all will be well (i.e. the amplifier
will be operating in its linear range). When ALC is apparent, the
linear is being driven into (or close to) its non-linear portion of the
curve.
This is a akin to the advice often given to PSK31 (or other digital
mode) operators when it is said to operate the rig just below the level
where ALC begins to activate..
