Hello Elecraft,
I am attempting the led and backlight installation. I am using the spacers 6mm and it calls for 19mm which makes no sense to me. It says the diffuser must be 3mm above the pc board. How can you use a 19mm spacer and get 3mm. WTF It says leads may not protrude through the board, which is fine. I put it on and the diffuser is 10mm above the board. The problem I have is does the lcd go under or over the diffuser? the leads dont' reach if it's over. and I don't understand how it could fit under. -- Best regards, Foxjazz mailto:[hidden email] ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
Fox,
See figure 5-11 in your K2 manual. 19 mm is the length of the spacers, not their thickness. 73, Gary KI4GGX K2 #2724 _____ Foxjazz <mailto:elecraft%40mailman.qth.net?Subject=Re:%20%5BElecraft%5D%20k2%20assem bly%20question&In-Reply-To=%3C1366469632.20100401215510%40foxjazz.net%3E> Thu Apr 1 23:55:10 EDT 2010 Hello Elecraft, I am attempting the led and backlight installation. Quote 1:
I don't know where you get 6mm from. The spacers are 19mm long, and standard PCB thickness (~1.5mm) thick. Two spacers on top of each other give 3mm. I had no problem with that part of the instructions. Note that the spacers are part of the final assembly. Quote 2: With the parts on my kit, both the diffuser and LCD leads went through the board. However a newer batch (diffusers I think) had shorter leads. The diffuser should NOT be 10mm above the board. Quote 3: The LCD goes over the diffuser. The leads are long enough if the diffuser is installed properly. The whole arrangement of LCD, diffuser and spacers should be clear from the diagrams. The only complication that ever existed was the new batch with shorter leads. (Use of Quote 1, 2, and 3 reflect the list policy of not permitting interleaved, reply below specific question, posting.) Foxjazz,
The spacers are 19 mm *long* and 1.5 mm *thick*. Stack two of them to obtain 3 mm. The backlighting diffuser is mounted 3mm from the board to the bottom of the diffuser. The LCD goes above the diffuser - see Figure 5-11. 73, Don W3FPR Foxjazz wrote: > Hello Elecraft, > > I am attempting the led and backlight installation. > > I am using the spacers 6mm and it calls for 19mm which makes no > sense to me. I was going to also say to make sure you look at the errata. The method used to install the diffuser is different in the errata than the one in the manual. (i.e. the old way, you put the spacers on the diffuser leads themselves and they stay there after installation, the new way you put them underneath until you solder the leads. Then they're removed).
The new way is harder to do because the spacers are free to move about, but the finished installation looks a lot cleaner to me since you don't have those spacers permanently stuck around the leads and on the ends of the diffuser. And yeah the LCD goes over the diffuser. This part takes a LOT of care to do it right, so go slowly and carefully following the instructions to the letter..... 73, LS W5QD |
