k2 clicking

John Cooper
Left k2 hooked during storm now acts funny. Have the k2 with amp and tuner in ec2. Tuner tunes but leds on kat100 don’t light up. Also shows hi curr on screen. KAT100 shows error code E243. When kpa100 switched something starts clicking one of the relays not sure which one yet. kat2 tuner shows no errors just when kat100 hooked up.

k2 by itself transmit fine, when hooked just to kat100 without kpa 100 it
goes hi current during transmit no matter 2 watts or 15 watts.

  John,

That is a good indication that the diodes D1 and D2 have been "zapped"
in the KAT100.  It is also possible that D16 and D17 in the KPA100 have
been zapped too, so if you are ordering 1N5711s, I would order at least
4 of them.

John, that's more evidence that it's the forward and reverse power detection
diodes in the KPA100 that failed since when you remove it the power
detection function is handled by a separate diode detector in the base K2.

The base K2 doesn't have a full forward/reverse power detection circuit to
calculate SWR. It uses a simpler diode detector to only measure the output
power at the antenna connector and reports the power assuming a 50 ohm
non-reactive load. The detector output tells the K2 when it is producing the
power requested by the POWER control.
