k3 matching filters

Bill Churchill
I received the KRX3 and the DVR today and am about to upgrade my k3. I am using the 2.7 if roofing filter in the main unit and requested and paid for a matching filter for the sub receiver.
The main receiver offset is -.97 but the new 2.k filter is marked -.93.
My question is are these a match or did I get the wrong part?
I would like to know before I install things because I would like not to have to redo the installation if the part is wrong. Also its the week-end before Christmas, and this would be a nice project for me over the Christmas holidays as we are shut down from work until 5 January.
Can anyone help me out?

Re: k3 matching filters

WILLIS COOKE
I just completed the same installation Bill.  I bought an additional 500 Hz filter and paid to match two filters.  They both matched exactly to my original filters.  My installation went pretty well.  My DVR seems to work, but I have not been able to find any instructions for operating.  Maybe we are supposed to experiment and find out.  I installed the DVR first then the KRX-3.  I was surprised to learn that the SO239 and the BNC connectors cannot both be connected at one time.  There is only one input to the receiver. (Maybe everyone else knew it, but I didn't).  My KRX-3 kit said to install the second DSP board with one nylon and two steel screws.  The DVR kit gave me two more nylon screws with instructions to replace the steel screws in the DSP so I used the nylon screws.  It looks like very small clearance for the screw heads so apparently some people have had shorts.

Good luck with your installation.  The second receiver is interesting.  I plugged in some surplus Labtec computer speakers which seem to work well except that their plug is a little too small for the K3 jack.  I remember some posts about that several months ago.  I need to dig them out and see what kind of plugs I need to buy for replacement.

From the latest beta firmware release notes [with slight editorial from
me ]:

Support for Digital Voice Recorder option (KDVR3):

Note: The following information is more accurate than the DVR
instructions in the K3 rev D owner’s manual.

     * DVR ICON: The DVR icon (dual arrows--above the S-meter) turns on
whenever the DVR is in use. The icon flashes slowly during all record
operations, and quickly during play.

     * DVR TX MESSAGES: Message record, play and repeat are functional.
(Message chaining will be added in a subsequent release.) To start voice
message record, tap REC, then tap M1-M4. Record will start immediately.
Tap M1-M4 again to stop recording. To play a voice message, tap M1-M4.
To repeat a voice message (e.g., a CQ), *hold* M1-M4 rather than tap.
Message play or repeat can be cancelled at any time by tapping REC.

[ note: be sure the MIC Gain is set for 5 bars of ALC on voice peaks to
get the recording level correct.]

     * DVR RX LOOP: Hold AF REC to start receive-audio recording. Hold
AF REC again to stop record. Up to 90 seconds of audio can be recorded;
beyond this, earlier audio will be overwritten. Hold AF PLAY to start
playback; press any switch to stop. VFO B will show the playback
position in seconds, relative to the most-recently recorded audio
segment. During PLAY, you can move forward/backward through RX audio
loop buffer by rotating VFO B. An asterisk (*) beside the seconds
counter shows the extent of the most recently recorded segment. Note: It
is OK to record received audio continuously; this might be useful as a
way of catching audio events that you wish to examine later. Record will
continue even if you transmit. However, at present, silence is recorded
for the duration of any transmission.

     * DVR RX LOOP PLAY IN TX MODE: First, enter voice transmit mode by
holding PTT or tapping XMIT. Then hold AF PLAY to start playback, and
press any switch to stop. CMP (speech compression) is automatically
disabled. Note: Playback volume of the RX loop buffer during TX mode is
not yet adjustable.

Thanks Toby,
I emailed Katie but she is on vacation. I thought perhaps someone in the
design group , Eric, Wayne, or Lyle would know about the filters.

I think you may have received the wrong filter.  At this point, I'd
install the new filter in the KRX3, but set the Main and KRX3 offsets to
-0.95 (split the difference).  20 Hz is not going to make a practical
difference in any operational sense that come sot mind.

You can check with Aptos to see about swapping the filter. If the new
filter is in the KRX3, it will be the easier one to swap out later.

Sorry about the error.

I hope you get a lot of enjoyment and use out of the KRX3. If you have a
second antenna, or a length of wire laying around that you can pretend
is a second antenna, you are likely to find Diversity reception a real
eye-opener (or is that a band opener?)

73 and Happy Holidays,

Lyle KK7P

As noted on our orde form, our matched offset filter spec is to within 40 Hz or less, since our 5 pole crystals can vary in center frequency from batch to batch.

Set the offset for the two filters identically to the nearest 10 Hz value half way between the two offset values. In your case,  set them both to -0.95. This results in a worse case center offset of 20 Hz, which is not detectable.  :-)

Shows what I know.  The matching spec is to within 40 Hz, so you in fact
received the correct filter.

Which is even better!

I didn't bother about paying/asking for matched default filters for my KRX3. The one in the main board has a -0.93kHz offset and the one in the KRX3 is -0.83kHz.

Shifting them both to -0.88kHz seems to make no difference to performance - would you expect a 50Hz shift in a nominal -6dB b/w of ~2.7kHz to be that noticable anyway?

However the wondering 'beat' between right and left channels disappears completely when you doctor the offsets - just need a nice big Beverage now.....

Re: k3 matching filters

Don Wilhelm-4
Stewart,

You are correct that the importance of the offset is inversely
proportional to the filter width.  A 50 Hz shift not make much
difference with the 2.7 or 2.8 kHz width, but it certainly will make a
big difference at a 200 Hz width.
