k3 vfo a encoder trouble

Periodically, while tuning the bands, the knob will become much more
difficult to turn.  If I keep going, there will be a light feeling thumpish
action, and suddenly it turns easily again.
Seems to happen more when turning counterclockwise.
Any ideas out there?
