hello... general question to the group... has anyone have/had experience
using the w2ihy audio gear with the K3... I see that the K3 has an EQ ... is it sufficient enough or just very basic??? scott w2ntv ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
Hello Scott,
I believe that the EQ in the K3 is very good. I still use the "W2IHY Audio Equalizer and Noise Gate" simply because the initial firmware for the K3 Noise Gate was resulting in reports of audio distortion. I think that has been greatly improved, but I have not tried it yet, since I have everything hooked up to use the old system with the K3. Hi Scott -
I have a "full W2IHY rack" (8-Band EQ, EQplus and iplus switch-box) that I use with my K3s and my non-Elecraft transceivers. I have used my K3s with everything from Yamaha CM-500 headsets to condenser mics to dynamic mics, with and without the rack, and I have received excellent audio reports in all configurations. I know everyone says that, but one member of my local club monitored me during Field Day (using a KX3 no less), and was "surprised" how good I sounded just using a CM-500 and the internal processing. The K3's signal chain contains a TX EQ, compressor and noise gate. Adjusted properly, you can obtain very good results with modest mics and no out-board signal processing. I consider, with respect to my W2IHY gear, out-board processing to be just "icing on the cake" and not a necessity with the K3. It's good enough to make my terrible voice (for intelligibility - way, way,
way too soft on overtones) into a crisply intelligible voice that doesn't sound like me at all. I've been asked "Who's at the mike?" Part of it is the digital audio level processing algorithm, CMP on the front panel, that comes with the equalizer. It's not clipping, with the inherent distortion, though some insist on calling it that. Folks say it sounds clear and undistorted at the settings I use. CMP=20 TX50=-16 TX100=-16 TX200=-16 TX400=-8 TX800=+8 TX1600=+16 TX2400=+16 TX3200=-16 I had reports of distortion, but they were associated with a problem **in the DC power supply** that accompanied higher power drain associated with well-compressed audio. (As always the admonition to avoid blaming the K3 first, because it usually isn't.) I find that I get through stuff using my "K3 voice" barefoot. Killer with the 8410. 73, Guy. I have the eight band equalizer as well as the EQ plus which I use on
occasion with the k3. I mainly use that gear with other radios. There is a rotary switch on the back of the EQ plus which allows me to switch the microphone quickly between any of three radios which are hooked to the unit. That makes it very convenient and I can use my Heil PR 40 with any of them. I normally use a Heil Pro headset with the k3 but either arrangement works very well. The EQ plus offers additional processing over and above what is available with the k3. I do use a slight amount of audio compression which is very effective and does not seem to cause the audio to deteriorate in any way. I do not use the noise gate because fortunately I don't need it in the shack. I also put a very slight amount of delay in the loop. It is not enough to be noticeable as a delay but it does seem to add a bit of presence to the audio. However, if it wasn't for the ease of switching the mike from one radio to another I probably would not bother with the IHY gear with the k3 because I do think the k3 offers more than enough control for most purposes.
