I do not think the FT 100 knob is all that great
It really is too small and does not feel that good.
I will not change but look fot the FT 900 and go to
W3FPR web sit!

I got one a long time ago.  It was somewhat small and I was surprised
that mine was slightly off-center, causing an annoying wobble.  I ended
up putting the rubber ring from the ft100 knob on my standard Elecraft
knob.  It's the right size, heavier, and doesn't wobble.  Although it
does not have a spinner, I find that I can spin it by placing my finger
on the raised rim of the Elecraft knob.  One could also use a finger
dimple as sold by Elecraft.

RE: knob

Folks,

The FT-900 rubber ring also fits over the stock K2 knob.  The ring was
available a couple months ago even though the knob was out of stock.  A bit
wider than the FT-100 ring and priced less too (less than a buck compared to
over $5 for the FT-100 ring).
Of course there are those who still advocate the broccoli ring solution <G>

What about Elecraft?
If we are so interested in changing the VFO knob (Yes i am also interested
to change that plastic sharp knob with some soft stuff) could Elecraft do
something?

I've been asking the same question.  It seems there is always quite a bit of interest in an Elecrfat-produced knob.  This is one of those threads that seems to re-surface every six months or so.  What do the Aptos boys say - any possibility?

Hi all,
I don't know why people go to all the trouble to change the knob on the
K2.  I have been using mine for 6 years and I love it just the way it
was designed.  I put my index finger on the edge of the knob and just
swirl away.  I even have no desire to get the little finger dimple.
The knob is nice and heavy, and the drag can be adjusted by how close it
is to the felt washer.

I must be "different" or something.

And it comes with rubber bands?  Can't imagine the shipping costs....and
wondering if the US Dept of Agriculture would let it it.

But, the thought counts!

It might be that you are immune to having some remin der of rice-box technology

I prefer the broccoli bands.....it helps save rubber trees.

It depends how much You use that knob!
If You only make some random qso's or ragchewing on skeds it is not a
problem.
Inmagine 48hrs of contesting mostly S&P on 5 bands turning that knob up and
down?
And from big Hf contests to several VHF....
And the other face of the problem....It looks better with rubber knob than
with the plastic one.

Help with KAT2

tom.w3qs
Hello Group,

I need some help on setting up the spacers between the two boards on the
KAT2.  I'm pretty sure the assembly instructions are incorrect, so instead
of asking for clarification on them, perhaps someone can simply tell me:

Where do the split lock washers go?

ALSO:  The male and female connectors (P and J, 4 & 5) don't appear to
completely mate.  Is that correct?

Thanks and 73,

Tom, W3QS

RE: Help with KAT2

Don Wilhelm-3
Tom,

Yes there will be part of the pin surfaces showing when the connectors are
properly mated - it is supposed to be that way.

Now for the screws, lockwashers and standoffs.  When you put the standoff on
the first board, use a lockwasher under the screwhead and one between the
board and the standoff - the one between the board and the standoff is the
most important.

Then after you mate the boards, put a lockwasher under the screwhead only.
It would be a real bear of a job to keep the washer between the board and
the standoff at that point, so don't do it that way, but do put a lockwasher
on the screw to keep the screw from backing out.

Don W3FPR

Jerry,

IMHO, the only thing wrong with the stock knob is the sharp edge at the
front perimeter.  I tune with my thumb resting on that corner and my thumb
gets sore after a bit.  Those fingerdimples may work for some folks, but
since I don't normally tune with a finger, they just get in the way for me.
I need something that will soften that edge, and the FT-900 rubber rings
work fine for me.

Re: knob

Kevin Rock
I thought they were sharp at first too.  I tune either with my left thumb
or with my right forefinger.  I pitched a baseball so much as a teenager
my forefinger is curved.  Helped me throw a wicked slider in my day but
now it is just bent.  This has helped my K2's tuning knob gain a patina
and lose its sharp edges.  I've thought of the broccoli bands but never
quite gotten around to it.  I eat enough of my cruciform veggies but have
grown to like my K2 the way it is ;)

P.S.  South Dakota would be a nice catch for the net :)

Nothing is wrong with the knob that comes on the K2.
Like nothing is wrong with normal wheels that comes on the average car.
But a lot of people is changing normal wheels (i don't know the exact
english/american term) with bigger and larger alluminium ones :)))
We are so different and that is beauty of life.

For limited casual use not a thing as the knob is well balanced as regards
weight/size and fits the available front panel space perfectly, however if you
have to move frequency a lot searching for stations the hard edges of the
knob  become a somewhat wearing to the fingers.

Had exactly the same problem with an earlier JRC JST-135 HF transceiver and
that was solved by installing a knob from the later JRC NRD-535 RX. The only
difference between the two was the NRD-535 had a rubber ring (tire) on the
outer  edge. What a difference this makes when searching for stations!

With this in mind it would perhaps be a good idea for Elecraft to consider
the provision of a suitable rubber ring to fit externally on the  circumference
of their stock VFO knob as outside the USA not all users will  have the
access to the reported solutions to the problem. My attempts to find a  suitable
rubber band of the type reported to come with asparagus  supplied in the USA
(asparagus tips?) have got nowhere. Have got a crony of mine  visiting the USA at
present switched on to finding sources.

Of the two Yaesu solutions with the FT100D and the FT900 rubber tires  which
is the best? The prices quoted for supplies of these in the USA will have
absolutely no bearing on the final UK cost.

Maybe for some people, FT-900 is better, but it is now an obselete part and
no more available from Yaesu... :-(
