No! No! Not knobs again, please!
The original knobs on the K1, KX1, K2 & K3 are all aesthetically and ergonomically perfect. Just like kids jacking up their cars, cutting holes in the hoods, and
painting flames behind the wheels. THEY think it looks neat but later they can't even give the goofy looking thing away. I like my tuning knob to spin too so I just built it not touching the felt. I scan with my finger or thumb just touching the face of the knob, not in the dimple, they don't work for me. Works just fine. Does not need to be heavier, bigger, shiny, lighted, flashing, heated, pink, or polka-dot. 73, de Jim KG0KP ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Pratt" <[hidden email]> To: "Elecraft Reflector" <[hidden email]> Sent: Sunday, May 02, 2010 12:56 AM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] knobs > No! I've read the KIO2 operating instruction for use with the K2 but I am not
clear on the following: Does the K2 put out VFOA frequency information on the pin 2 TXD and pin3 RXD lines continuously? Does it need to be polled to obtain this info? I want to use it with a Steppir interface that works perfectly with the K3!! I want >to use it with a Steppir interface that works perfectly with the K3!! Nearly all radios and ham logging software use only pins 2, 3, and signal return for radio control and information. The K2 uses the other pins on its DB9 connector for other functions that are VERY different from the RS232 standard. The SteppIR controller I own (the newer SDR100) monitors the serial line for frequency instructions sent from the computer control program to the radio, and will change frequency to follow those instructions. I don't believe that it gets frequency info from the radio. Or perhaps it doesn't when there's a computer controlling the radio. To clarify that, to make the SteppIR change frequency, I must use my logging software to tune the radio. For example, in N1MM (and in several others) I can send the radio to a frequency (14050 kHz, for example) by typing 14050 into the entry window. I can also change bands with <CTRL> <PG UP> and <CTRL> <PG DN>. In both cases, the SteppIR controller will follow it. But if I change bands on the radio, the SteppIR controller doesn't move. I don't know if the SteppIR controller works with the K2. You should call them and ask. When I was getting mine set up, I had several conversations with their support guy, and he was quite helpful. 73, Jim K9YC ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
The SteppIR controller should work using the "Kenwood" settings *IF* you configure the K2 for AI1. Please refer to the K2 Programmers Reference available from the Elecraft web site. You will need a cable that connects ONLY TxD (pin 2) and ground (pin5) from the K2 to pin 2 and pin 5 of the SteppIR "Data In" connector. The SteppIR end of the cable will also require a jumper between pins 7 and 9. The same cable works with the K3. If you are not able to configure the K2 for AI1 operation, you will need the SteppIR "Y" cable and a logging program that can poll the K2. The considerations are identical for either the K2 or K3. 73, ... I'm using MixW as my data and logging program with my K2/100 and the KIO2 "special cable" for several years now. Up to now I haven't been using the CAT function for frequency tracking, but I do want to start. The COM port works fine for PTT rig control. Pardon me if I ask a "newbie" question, but what settings in the K2 menu do I have to check/change to implement this. If it's documented somewhere please point me to it. With thanks. -- 73 de K2ASP - Phil Kane Elecraft K2/100 s/n 5402 ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
Phil,
For the K2, the PTT function can be done using the K2 CAT command set if your PC application implements it. Normally applications implement PTT and keying through the DTR and RTS signal lines on the RS-232 interface. Since the K2 implementation of the AUX I/O connector uses the pins that would normally connect to the DTR and RTS signals for internal K2 signaling lines, those pins must not be connected to a serial port signal, and detection of DTR and/or RTS active must be done externally to the K2. That is usually accomplished using a simple transistor, diode and resistor circuit like that mentioned in the Digipan (and other PSK31 applications) documentation. An optoisolater is also commonly used to develop PTT or keying closures if there is a need to isolate the computer ground from the K2 ground. Note for K3 users - the K3 does allow attachment of a standard serial cable to its RS-232 connector and will detect DTR or RTS active for PTT or keying whichever is selected in the K3 menu (make certain your solftware application and the K3 agree about which line is for which purpose). 73, Don W3FPR.
