Re: kpa100

Ron,

The update/T-R switch redesign was done to combat a parasitic that
occurred with some KPA100s (not all and really not many) on 40 meters.

The parasitic showed up more commonly for builders who were also using
the KAT100 for some as yet unexplained reason.

So if you either: just want to have the newest design, or if you are
operating with the KAT100 or if you find a 40 meter parasitic later,
then yes, add the upgrade.  It is easier when you are doing the initial
build - download the new manual Rev E (or Rev D with the latest errata
sheet) and build according to the new manual.  If you choose that route,
be certain to do a full inventory so you will know which parts are extra
and not to be installed with the updated build.

I might add to Don's reply that if you decide to build according to
the Rev E manual, you'll need the following replacement parts:

Part     Quant.
Item                                                               Ref

E530102   2      Cap.  .0047 mF "472" 100V  .25" LS        C67, C80
in KPA100

E530033   2      Cap. 1200 pf "6122" 630V polyprop         C2A, C6D

E530262   2      Cap.  .0047 mF "472" 250V .4" LS            C64, C79

E530295   1      Cap.  .22mF "u22J63" 63V .2" LS             C31

E680001   2      Toroidal ind. T50-1 blue .5"
L16, RFC1

E500006   1      Resistor, 100k
1/4W                                     R4

E500090   1      Resistor  22K
1/4W                                        R40

E690006   2      RF Choke 15uH  BRN-GRN-BLK                RFC4, RFC5

In addition, you might want to purchase replacements for R19 and R20
if the ones in your kit are blue rather than reddish brown.  See
Don's email of March 4 regarding R19 and R20.

I had exactly your situation, and just completed assembly of my
KPA100 with a Rev E manual using a kit of Rev C parts.
I had no problems, and the KPA100 worked perfectly in every respect
when I first fired it up.

I might add that the great folks at the Elecraft Parts Dept. sent my
parts on the same day I sent my email order.

Good luck.
Dick, K0KK

Dick and all,

For those who do not want to list and purchase the parts individually,
those parts are included in KPA100UPKT.

I think the same applies to me. Do you recommend to build the KPA100 with
the upgrade kit? then I'd have to order it.
I think there will be less to change than doing it afterwards.
