kx1; practice sending mode

Paul Clay
Is there a keyer test or some other mode on the
kx1 where you can practice your sending without
transmitting?  If so, what's the menu setting(s)?

Thanks,
Paul

Just tune it outside the ham band a few KHz.

Isn't there a mode to not actually transmit?  I am not sure that causing interference on the band is a good suggestion......  How about into a dummy load instead?

Re: kx1; practice sending mode

Grif-2
When the KX-1 is tuned to a frequency several KHz outside the ham band, the
transmitter is automatically disabled and all you get is the sidetone when
it is keyed. I think the display will say "Error" when keyed. Sorry I didn't
make this clear before. I didn't mean to suggest that one should actually
transmit outside the ham bands. When you get far enough outside the ham band
that you get the "Error" message when keying, then you are not transmitting.

Yes.  Hold the KX1's "Band/Speed" button to bring up the keying speed.  As long as you're in the speed display, the transmitter is disabled.

Yes, there is a practice sending mode.
Go to the menu, turn the VFO until you see "PLY", tap the VFO button to
toggle
Between transmit or "0" for practice.

Small correction, guys. When the KX-1 attempts to transmit out of band (and
doesn't),
the display reads "End", not "Error". I was thinking of my VX-2's response
to attempted
out of band transmitting. Sorry.

RE: kx1; practice sending mode

We knew what you meant. I like practicing with the VFO out-of-band rather
than buried under some menu item because you can just glance at the rig and
see END telling you you are not outputing. Otherwise, I wonder how many guys
finish code practice, forget that P=0 and end up wondering why nobody is
answering them.
