I learned to read English over 60 years ago. I learned Morse over 53 years ago. I would still recommend to those wanting to learn English to first learn the alphabet before they attempt to go learning entire words. Now for Morse . . . . learn it anyway you can if your are inclined . . . I learned it as a language not as dots and dashes. When I listen to 50 wpm I hear words not dots and dashes. I would like to see someone decode dots and dashes at 50 wpm. That would be 250 letters at an average of 3 or 4 dots and dashes or 1,000 such attempts every minute. For those who have attained 50 wpm copying ability you understand what I am saying. Morse like English or any other sound whose function is to convey some intelligent meaning (definition of language) you can see that you really need to think about what you are attempting to do when you learn CW. I still think learning the basic CW characters with a straight key is best but you do what you want.
Just remember you are attempting to learn a LANGUAGE (sounds conveying meaning). I am not the best CW operator but after 53 years I have finally achieved some competence (at least in my mind).
My K2 has everything ( or shortly will have) but a SSB option. I am looking forward to the DSP filter soon.
