mic wiring

Nr4c
Hello fans.

I'm sure this has been covered before, but humor me.

I am making a mic from a Radio Shack element, with two leads.  One for + and
one for -.  I have some nice mic cable, very flexible, and with two
conductors inside a shield.  I am planning to connect the + lead from the
mic to the pin 1 of the front panel connector, and the - lead to pin 7.
Should I connect the shield to pin 8?

Any thoughts, or errors?

ALWAYS connect EVERY cable shield to the CHASSIS. If the connector is
screwed down to the chassis, this connection can be to the connector shell.

Beware however, not all microphone jacks in today's radios are actually
mounted to what we would normally call the "chassis."
