need digital for dummies

John Wiener
I've been using the K2 for about two months.  Had a few SSB QSO's but
mostly CW.
Being new to modern ham radio, I've done some reading about PSK, etc
but still don't see the big picture.

I use an iMac G4 and just downloaded MacLoggerDX.

What exactly do I need for PSK or Pactor or ??

As far as I can tell I need some software for the sound card and a
TNC and proper cabling.  Please note that the iMac uses FireWire and
USB (no serial port available).

If someone could lead me through the next few steps, I'd be very
grateful!

PS, My 10-12 watts may not work them but I sure do hear a lot of DX
on 40 and 30 meters!  Great receiver!
Israel, Croatia, Bulgaria, Germany and Outer Hebrides (Scotland) all
within less than 2 hours...very interesting to follow the
Gray Line propagation on the DXLogger map as I listened on those
bands.  Also heard Canary Islands (and subsequent pile-up!)

John (and other Mac users);

There is an excellent email list for Mac users. It is the Ham-Mac
mailing list. For more info and to subscribe, go to the URL:
http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/ham-mac

As for the digital modes, there are several options, but I would
start out with CocoaModem. It is very good freeware put out by W7AY,
and can do many digital modes, with perhaps more to come. Read about
the program and download it at:
http://homepage.mac.com/chen/

As for interfacing, USB-serial adapters work just fine. The Mac USB
implementation is excellent, and there are quite a few serial
adapters that work well with it. I mainly use a collection of
adapters from Keyspan, and have found that adapters using the FTDI
chip set also work great (this includes the  MicroHam products). The
important thing here is that the company have drivers to support
MacOS X.

With the information provided by these applications (including
MacLogger/DX) and the help you can get here and at Ham-Mac, you
should be up and running quickly!

I suggest getting one of the M-Audio devices. I have the MobilePre
USB. Works great.

For software, use MultiMode, LinPSK, and/or check Version Tracker for
some others that are out there.

You're in luck! Since you are using a Mac, you have the opportunity
to use one of the best RTTY/PSK programs around -- CocoaModem. You
can download it here: <http://homepage.mac.com/chen>

To use CocoaModem, you'll need to buy or build an adapter to plug
your rig audio into your Macintosh. I built mine, it uses small audio
transformers to avoid ground loops and resistors for attenuation to
the correct levels.
