Eric, KE6US, took a great night-time photo of his K1 with the new
backlight installed. He was kind enough to let us post the photo on our site. See: http://www.elecraft.com/K1/K1_backlight_detail.jpg I believe Eric used the 10 mA option, given the brightness. 6 mA is just a bit dimmer, but still quite adequate. The instruction sheet explains how to use the AGC on/off menu entry for backlight control (you can assign this menu entry to the PFn switch on the front panel, too). I'd be curious to know whether anyone besides me has set their K1 up this way. 73, Wayne N6KR --- http://www.elecraft.com _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I measured 58 ma before and 68 ma after with the 200 ohm resistor. This
agrees with what Elecraft is saying. I didn't try the 330 ohm resistor, but Wayne says about 6 ma. I was satisfied with the output at 10ma and saving 4ma isn't significant to me since the K1 is usually connected to a 7aH battery! It's VERY easy to change the resistor if you don't like what you get. Four screws pop the whole front panel assy off. Removing one screw, one nut and 3 knobs gives you complete access to the component side of the front panel board. Change the resistor, reassemble and you're done. Ten minutes from beginning to end. More pictures on the K1 page on my web site. Got mine installed today. It works great. Nice green light
behind the LCD. Much better than my jury rigged white LEDs! 73, Sandy W5TVW K1 #1178 ----- Original Message ----- From: "ron" <[hidden email]> To: "Elecraft Reflector" <[hidden email]> Sent: Wednesday, September 14, 2005 1:00 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] nice photo of a K1 with LCD backlight | wayne burdick wrote: | > Eric, KE6US, took a great night-time photo of his K1 with the new | > backlight installed. Wayne,
Where is the info on using AGC on/off for turning light on and off? Nothing on my modification sheet about it. Also nothing on sheet currently at Elecraft website. 73, Sandy W5TVW Light works great by the way! ----- Original Message ----- From: "wayne burdick" <[hidden email]> To: "Elecraft Reflector" <[hidden email]> Cc: "QRP-L" <[hidden email]> Sent: Wednesday, September 14, 2005 12:43 PM Subject: [Elecraft] nice photo of a K1 with LCD backlight | Eric, KE6US, took a great night-time photo of his K1 with the new | backlight installed. Sorry about that, Sandy. This information was actually in the e-mail I sent announcing the backlight, not in the instruction sheet. Here it is: ON/OFF Control The backlight draws only 6 to 10 mA, but you can add on/off control if desired. One possibility is to use a switch mounted on the left side panel. However, since most K1 owners never turn off AGC, it may be preferable to use the AGC menu entry to control the backlight. To do this: (1) cut the RF board trace running from pin 8 of J6 to C31; (2) add a jumper on the bottom of the RF board from J6 pin 8 to P1 pin 18; (3) use another jumper to connect the cathode (K) lead of the backlight LED to pin 18 of J1 on the front panel board. The AGC menu entry can be assigned to PFn if you don't use this switch for XIT or some other function. 73, Wayne N6KR ---- http://www.elecraft.com _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Many thanks to you, Wayne, and all who responded! Although I installed
a "two white LED" light mod myself, the backlight is infinitely better! K1 a great little rig. Eventually, I will order the T1 to go with my "HF Packer" amplifier on CW. Think it will do OK with 25-30 watts on CW and replace an MFJ coupler I'm using now that is as big or bigger than the K1! 73, Sandy W5TVW ----- Original Message ----- From: "wayne burdick" <[hidden email]> To: "Sandy, W5TVW" <[hidden email]> Cc: "QRP-L" <[hidden email]>; "Elecraft Reflector" <[hidden email]> Sent: Thursday, September 15, 2005 6:27 PM Subject: Re: K1 backlight on/off using AGC menu entry | Sandy, W5TVW wrote: | | > Wayne, | > Where is the info on using AGC on/off for turning light on and off? | > Nothing on my modification sheet about it.
